BEYH Ahmad HNEINEH Mona HOTEIT Fatmeh MOURAD Reda SLEIMAN Anwar 1S2 The text “Erika and Ada” seems to be an article. Actually, we don’t have a specific source but we can guess that it’s taken from a magazine. We can also hypothesize that it’s not an old article, because as we all noticed the photos are modern. So the problem this text states is contemporary. In this article, Erika explains how hard her life was before having access to clean water in her village. Actually, she used to miss school, get sick, and exhausted - “I was suffering with stomach cramps” because she couldn’t wash properly. And she wasn’t the only one affected by this issue, in fact the entire village suffered from diseases. Erika added too that her school closed down for one month in 1998 because the students were all sick. But after getting water, Erika can look to a brighter future: a better health, a real education and an easier life. Erika holding a water bucket Ada, Erika’s mother, is satisfied with the tap stand in her village. She explained how much her life is easier now that she can get clean water. Actually, every day, she used to wake up very early and go search for water all day long, and she would be late for launch. She also explained that she couldn’t have more than one meal a day because there wasn’t enough water to consume. Today, Ada is using water for washing, cleaning, cooking, drinking, and also gardening! Her life is healthier: she’s getting three meals, a clean home and no more diseases! Ada, Erika’s mother Erika and Ada showed in this article their joy with their new life. After getting clean water, they are able to wash properly, eat, drink, go to school and have a healthy way of living. Water is so important for everyone. This article shows that this source is priceless. And not being able to get clean water affects human being because humanity can’t live without it! From a personal Point of view, I find this text very interesting. As a matter of fact, reading and analyzing the text made me realize the importance of water, and the misery that the Africans must live each day to get access to water. Moreover, Erika Makalli explained the positive change in her life: after getting clean water, she could go to school every day! What I liked about this argument is that it showed how water can influence the life of a student. So the author, by giving this example, he made millions of students think seriously about water and its importance in their lives. I am now more aware of the danger that the world is facing, and as a student, I’m trying to be more attentive and I’m making sure not to waste this vital resource! Tanzania is still unequally provided with water, but it turned out to be on the way to improvement, especially in what concerns the water crisis and penury, as showed the example of Erika and Ada Makalli. But is Lebanon also improving its water issues? And what’s the actual situation of water in Lebanon? After the war with Israel in 2006, the water in the South of Lebanon became more and more scarce, and thousands of people were cut off the water pipelines. UNICEF, as long as other international humanitarian aid organizations, initiated a program that consists on installing 29 gas chlorination systems across southern Lebanon, to increase water quality, while the EU and World Bank are working on a scheme to build 12 sewage treatment stations across the country. • Despite the initiatives to improve the situation in Lebanon: • everyone still pays the same amount of money for water ($120 / year), no matter how much they consume • only 56% of the Lebanese are connected to mains water • one in three buys drinking water • water pipelines leak an average of 50% • 70% of water systems in Lebanon have no sewage treatment
