Survey on integration of migrants and their descendants « Life histories and family origins » Aims Set up the effect of the origins on the life conditions and social trajectories controlling for other socio-demographic characteristics Main issues : Integration Discriminations Definition of an immigrant (used in France) A person who is born abroad and who was not French at birth. The latest point is important in France referring to the large number of migrants coming from former colonies. 6.6 million born abroad ; among them 5 millions are immigrants using the French definition. Legal environment Statistical council: judges the usefulness of the project Label committee. Judges the statistical quality of the survey (including sampling) National Commission “Informatique” and Freedom: allows or not the survey or some questions regarding to the rights of the person And, that was unexpected, the Constitutional Council. They ruled on the fact whether it right or not to ask questions on religion, origin and which ones.
