Data: The CPR as a main source for population and social
statistics in Norway
•
Central Register of Population (CPR) established in 1964 – based on
the Population Census of 1960 + local registers already established in
1946
•
•
Established for administrative - not statistical – purposes
•
All national administrative registers that are based on individuals use the
pin-code.
•
A comprehensive register society. “All” governmental agencies and a lot
of private firms have limited access to these register data - more than
1500 in total.
•
Cooperation between governmental agencies
The pin-code essential in linking all the various registers based on this
system

Quality of data
• General and frequent use – a central premise for quality
• Work in progress on estimating the number of illegal
immigrants
• Unregistered emigration probably a bigger problem than
illegal/unregistered immigration
