GET BETTER EVERY DAY! GO JUMBOS! SUCCESS IS NOT MAGICAL OR MYSTICAL. IT IS THE NATURAL CONSEQUENCE OF CONSISTENTLY APPLYING THE BASIC FUNDAMENTALS. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • • WE BELIEVE IN THE GAME, THE SPEED OF THE GAME, AND WANT IT TO BE THE FASTEST GAME ON 2 FEET. OUR NUMBER ONE TENET IS THAT IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO SCORE GOALS IN SETTLED, 6v6 SITUATIONS. WE HAVE PUT A GREAT DEAL OF EFFORT INTO ATTACKING ALL OTHER SITUATIONS, ESPECIALLY IN TRANSITION. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • • • AT EVERY CLINIC AND EVERY DISCUSSION WITH COACHES, WE TALK ABOUT STATS/PERCENTAGES OF GOALS SCORED UNSETTLED VS. SETTLED. WE VERY RARELY GET CLEAN FAST BREAKS, YET WE PRACTICED THEM WHEN WE FOCUSED ON “TRANSITION AND UNSETTLED” WE HAVE TO CREATE TRANSITION & UNSETTLED. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • • • WE PUSH EVERY EVEN, FAST, SLOW, MAN-DOWN SITUATION AND ATTACK OUR OPPONENT IN SPACE. WE DO THIS BY GIVING OUR ATHLETES SPACE AND CONFIDENCE TO ATTACK IN ALL SITUATIONS AND PUT PRESSURE ON OUR OPPONENT TO DEFEND OUR ATHLETES IN SPACE AND IN NON- TRADITIONAL SLIDING SCENARIOS. PLAYING THE GAME THIS WAY WEARS DOWN OPPONENTS, EXCITES OUR PLAYERS, AND CERTAINLY TRIES THE PATIENCE OF COACHES. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • • • DECISION MAKING OF 18-22 YEAR OLD YOUNG MEN IS WHAT WE TRUST OUR PAYCHECK TO. HAVE TO HAVE THE FORTITUDE TO STICK WITH PHILOSOPHY, EMBRACE MISTAKES, AND GIVE THE GAME TO THE PLAYERS. THEY WILL REWARD YOU. ARGUABLY THE BIGGEST GOAL OF OUR RECENT HISTORY CAME ON A 4 VS. 6 MAN-DOWN BREAK. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • WHEN WE ATTEMPT TO CONTROL TOO MUCH OR MAKE OUR 18-22 YEAR OLDS THINK, RESULTS CAN BE FRUSTRATING. • WHO DO YOU BLAME? ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • CREATING THE CULTURE, EMBRACING THIS STYLE CAN BE CHALLENGING. IT CERTAINLY DOES NOT ALWAYS GO WELL. • WE FIGHT AGAINST “WE NEED A POSSESSION” AND INSTILL “WE NEED GOALS” ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • FACE-OFFS ARE A GREAT TIME TO PUSH TEMPO, ATTACK, AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPECIALIZATION OF THE GAME. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • • WE PRACTICE HOW WE WANT TO PLAY. THESE SITUATIONS DO NOT HAPPEN IN A VACUUM. THEY ARE REFLECTED IN EVERY DRILL AND HOW WE ATTACK EVERYTHING WE DO. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • • EMBRACE MISTAKES. • OUR TEMPO IS REFLECTED IN EVERY DRILL. EVERY DRILL WILL SHOW JUST HOW MANY MISTAKES WE MAKE. PLAYERS DO NOT LAMENT ON MISTAKES AND WE ALWAYS ENCOURAGE THEM MAKE ANOTHER. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • • BEZ DRILL- COMMON DRILL- CONSTANT 3 V 2’S, ALLEY TO ALLEY. • WE LOVE IT BECAUSE IT IS CONSTANT MOVEMENT, CONSTANT REACTION TO MISTAKES. • • LONG STICKS HANDLE, SHOOT, ATTACK. NAMED FOR ALEXANDER BEZDEK ‘07, DUXBURY HIGH SCHOOL- WE ARE ALWAYS LEARNING AND PICK UP THINGS ANYWHERE. COMPETITION- USUALLY CLASS CHALLENGE, ALWAYS KEEP SCORE, AND ALWAYS REWARD WINNING. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • BRADY DRILL- OUR GRADUATE ASSISTANT GETS TO NAME THIS DRILL AFTER HIS FAVORITE NFL QB. • EVERYTHING WE DO IS ABOUT DECISION MAKING, TAKING CONTROL, AND BEING PRO-ACTIVE. • • • SSDM’S AND LSM’S ON “OFFENSE” OM’S AND D ON DEFENSE. DEVELOPS OUR TRANSITION PERSONNEL AND THEIR CONFIDENCE IN ATTACKING UNSETTLED SITUATIONS. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • FULL FIELD ADD IT UP • EVERYONE DOES IT, BUT THIS DRILL IS OUR STAPLE AS IT INCORPORATES EVERYTHING WE HAVE SEEN. • A FULL CYCLE TAKES A 1:30 AT THE MOST, USUALLY QUICKER. 3 POSSESSIONS A TEAM. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • MINI GAMES- WE DRAFT TEAMS AND COMPETE THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER. • • • TONS OF HIDDEN CONDITIONING. 4 V 4, EVERYBODY GOES EVERYWHERE. DEVELOPS CONFIDENCE OF DEFENSIVE PERSONNEL ON OFFENSE AND PUTS THEM IN ALL SITUATIONS NECESSARY TO BE CREATIVE, PRO-ACTIVE LACROSSE PLAYERS. ON THE RUN UP TEMPO LACROSSE • DRILLS • THUNDER DOME FACE-OFF DRILL • FULL TEAM FACEOFF DRILL, KEEPS EMPHASIS ON TEAM’S INVOLVEMENT OF FACE-OFF UNIT AND WIN. • LOSING DRAW MAN, ON POSSESSION, HAS TO LEAVEFIELD IMMEDIATELY • • RESULT IS A 6v5 BREAK AND ATTACK MENTALITY. ALWAYS KEEP SCORE. TUFTS LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY RELENTLESS- We are focused and attacking every second the ball is on our end. TAKE PRIDE IN OUR EFFORT IN EVERYTHING THAT WE DO! WE LOVE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY DEFENSE! EMBRACE IT! WE LOVE THE CHALLENGE! CONSTANT COMMUNICATION- Listening as well as talking. If you are not talking, you are more worried about individual defense than team defense. DISCIPLINE- POSITIONING, OFF BALL D, APPROACH, CHECKS. Our attention to detail will be unmatched. It is exciting that we are surrounded by people who care about us and want to see us improve. Take advantage of it. Do not be stubborn; there are no egos here. TRANSITION- We take pride in our stick skills and expect to be involved in scores. CLEAR THE BALL. First player without the ball crashes the crease, second player without ball supports the ball carrier. WE ARE THE AGRESSOR IN TRANSITION AND NEED SOLID DECISION MAKING! PLAY HARD - You have the rest of your life to watch lacrosse. When you are on the field, play like a wild man. WHAT IS PLAYING HARD? CONSISTENTLY DOING THE LITTE THINGS CORRECTLY! “Training prepares you for the expected, but education prepares you for the unexpected.” GREAT TEAMS CONSISTENTLY PLAY GREAT DEFENSE! EVERYTHING WE DO WE DO TOGETHER! TUFTS UNIVERSITY LACROSSE Non-Negotiable Fundamentals of Off-Ball Defense CONSISTENTLY DO YOUR JOB! Do not mistake activity for achievement TUFTS UNIVERSITY LACROSSE Non-Negotiable Fundamentals of Off-Ball Defense THANK YOU! AGAIN. SINCERELY. THANK YOU!
