1 Smart Grid Education at Curtin University- Master degree in Emerging Power Systems Professor Syed Islam Curtin University [email protected] 2 Background • Renaming and redesigning the Master course in Renewable Energy Power Systems to Emerging Power Systems • The industry is now embracing smart power systems concepts and there is no formal educational opportunities to skill workforce – Now includes Smart grid modules – GEEP, IEC61850, protection, power simulation and power electronic laboratories – Funded by API, ABB, GE, SIEMENS, SEL and Curtin 3 Results • Achieving industry sponsorships is a challenge • Many hidden costs Acoustic study, protection, electric installation and resource allocation • Brought academics within the school together • Industry exposure, GEEP is a site on the university visitor’s list • increased enrolments in our Master degree course- both local and overseas students 4 Conclusions/Recommendations • Important to keep our courses up to date • Industry could be convinced to participate in developing a course and related laboratories • This modernization of our power course helps to overcome the poles and wires image of power engineering
