Background
• Renaming and redesigning the Master course in
Renewable Energy Power Systems to Emerging
Power Systems
• The industry is now embracing smart power systems
concepts and there is no formal educational
opportunities to skill workforce
– Now includes Smart grid modules
– GEEP, IEC61850, protection, power simulation and
power electronic laboratories
– Funded by API, ABB, GE, SIEMENS, SEL and Curtin

Results
• Achieving industry sponsorships is a challenge
• Many hidden costs Acoustic study, protection,
electric installation and resource allocation
• Brought academics within the school together
• Industry exposure, GEEP is a site on the
university visitor’s list
• increased enrolments in our Master degree
course- both local and overseas students
4
Conclusions/Recommendations
• Important to keep our courses up to date
• Industry could be convinced to participate in
developing a course and related laboratories
• This modernization of our power course helps
to overcome the poles and wires image of
power engineering
