Physician Workforce Research:
Focus on Physician Race and Ethnicity
AAMC’s Center for Workforce Studies conducted a series of
analyses focusing on physician race and ethnicity with data from its
Surveys of Physicians Under and Over 50 (two nationally
representative sample surveys conducted in 2006). The first of
three installments in the Diversity Resources and Data Snapshots
series featuring this research, results reported here focus on
physician demographic and practice characteristics.
Physician Race & Ethnicity:
Demographic & Practice Characteristics
• Minority physician numbers have been growing in the
U.S., but not as fast as the population among Blacks
and Hispanics.
• The feminization of the physician workforce has been
disproportionately non-white.
• Solo practice is no longer so prevalent among younger
doctors, with greatest shift among Asian or Pacific
Islander and Black/African American physicians.
• Black/African American physicians are the lest likely to
work part time.
