Open Educational Resources for Health 2009 Efforts • Conduct policy and OER production workshops at each partner institution. • Establish OER production processes at each of the four partner institutions. • Continue development of the dScribe process, a distributed and participatory model for OER production. Results • Published OER on institutional repositories. • Some partners have established policies for OER while others are in the process of updating their policy frameworks (e.g., around copyright, academic credit for published OER) to better enable OER production. • Organized the inaugural meeting of the African Health OER Network the four partners and four other African universities. Next Steps • Launch African Health OER Network in 2010 to expand network throughout the continent. • Engage a broad coalition of content producers. OER in Action, at... Challenge The inadequate density and distribution of health care providers negatively affects health outcomes around the globe. In particular, Sub-Saharan Africa has too few healthcare professionals being trained to meet local needs. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Approach The University of Michigan, OER Africa, and four African university partners are working together to build a sustainable and scalable OER program to improve the delivery of health education. By establishing and supporting collaborative content development programs for health professions curricula, we are ensuring that our African partners are active participants in these OER processes and not just the beneficiaries. We are also working with university leadership in implementing institutional policy frameworks that facilitate the success of OER.
