SciFi Tracker – SW Status & Plans Julia Sedgbeer for Ed McKigney Imperial College London General SW status Simulation & Reconstruction Performance Studies & Plans Test Beam Resources Summary …. Plans concentrate on now till October 2003 Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 1 SciFi Engineering representation – 5 stations a) Ribbon doublet structure Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 b) u-v-t fibre plan 2 Questions from Review Panel Fibre tracker It seems essential to perform a full simulation of a tracker with five planes, including nominal inefficiency and assessment of the redundancy by simulation of the loss of readout— dead fibres. The impact of noise and misalignment should also be assessed. What is the status of this simulation? Because of the cost saving by multiplexing, it is important to repeat the simulation in a realistically multiplexed arrangement. Will the main alignment be derived from “straight through” muons? Some documented information on the performance of the fibre tracker in the MUSCAT experiment would be useful. Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 3 General SW Status Simulation feature (Ed Mckigney) status 5 stations Electronic noise Dead Channels ~ implemented Multiplexing Misalignment Julia Sedgbeer displacements rotations ‘nominal’ SciFi ‘ideal’ SciFi simulation simulation 0 (> 2 p.e.) 0 0.25% 0 71 none 0 0 Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 4 General SW Status Electronic Noise Cross talk Experience at DØ – no cross talk – verified by HW tests Dead channels Experience of VLPC’s at DØ – no noise above 2 p.e. Experience at DØ – 77,000 channels 200 compromised fibre channels – 0.25% 190 compromised VLPC channels – 0.25% Alignment Experience at DØ – 835 μm fibres Precision of fibre mounting ~35-40 μm Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 5 DØ fibre tracker - VLPC performance (A.Bross) VLPC (Visible Light Photon Counter) – Cryogenic APD @ 9K VLPC HISTE VI –High QE 80% –Low noise <5X104 Hz (@1.0 pe) –High Rate capability >40 MHz –High production yield 70% Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 6 General SW Status Reconstruction space point algorithm – require hits in 3 views of 1 station (triplet) track finder requires 4/5 or 5/5 triplet points track fit includes energy loss tracking efficiency & purity already v. good (Ed Mckigney, Oct 2002, Berkeley) Grid Job submission to Grid exists (IC - EDG) – being automated (web interface – K.Georgiou) RF background simulation So far used uniform distribution parallel to axis – vary rates Improved model being implemented (Yagmur Torun) Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 7 Performance studies & plans Done Lower priorty (Ed Mckigney) Important study ‘ideal’ SciFi ‘nominal’ SciFi – (MUX & dead chn) except study params RF bkg MUX Dead Channels Misalignment RF & dead chn. Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 8 RF bkg studies - pt resolution Distributions from the Berkeley meeting Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 9 MUX studies - pt resolution MUX 7 1 reduces pt resolution by ~2 Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 10 Performance studies & plans Reconstruction plans – low priority Space points allow points made from hits in 2 out of 3 views in a station (doublets) Track finder allow limited number of double points per track Grid plans – priority? – need input from collab. Extend grid access to MICE collaboration Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 11 Test Beam Plan .. Single station prototype Cosmic ray test FNAL – September 2003 Determine: Light yield at VLPC – sufficient to allow noise rejection? Cross talk – small? (Also demonstrate multiplexing and precision of fabrication) …. compare results with simulation Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 12 Resources Computing Some access to Grid farms in IC/HEP and LeSC Adequate for studies to be done this summer Manpower Ed Mckigney replacement: – shortlist - expect appointment in July - test beam commitment SW: A.Tapper (IC), A.Khan (Edinburgh), J.Sedgbeer (IC), P.Kyberd (Brunel), grad student from Oct. (IC). Grid: K.Georgiou (IC), D.Colling(IC) Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 13 Summary SW simulation & reconstruction Computing resources adequate resources available Manpower resources most of the functionality required is in place losing Ed – will be replaced … but test beam commitment plus some extra manpower for SW & Grid Aim to complete required SW studies by October Julia Sedgbeer Mice Collaboration Meeting, June 2003 14
