Hyper-V VMware Source: IDC WW Quarterly Server Virtualization Tracker, September 2014. Hyper-V and ESX + vSphere shares based on percent market share among all x86 new hypervisor deployments (nonpaid and paid). x86 hypervisor shipments include those sold on new servers, new nonpaid hypervisor deployments aboard new servers, and new hypervisor sales and nonpaid hypervisor deployments on installed base servers. Share gains for Hyper-V and ESX + vSphere come in part from market share transfers from older products from same vendors.

Migration Automation Toolkit

Free solution to automate & scale MVMC VM Conversions

Migration Automation Toolkit for MVMC

Series of PowerShell scripts that wrapper MVMC with automation to perform multiple virtual machine conversions simultaneously, not physical.

Free to download, edit and customize Uses free SQL Server Express (or other SQL Server editions) to store information about the conversion process Supports multiple simultaneous conversions per MVMC machine Scales out across ‘Helper Nodes’ – multiple machines running MVMC and scripts all coordinated from central node More helper nodes = more conversions simultaneously.

Mobility Service:

light weight OS-based service installed on target. Captures data in real time & syncs source volumes to target

Process Server (PS):

On-premises server that facilitates communication between the Mobility Service and target virtual machines in Azure. Provides caching, queuing, compression, encryption and bandwidth management

Configuration Server (CS):

Manages the communication between the Master Target and the MA Portal. Installed on a dedicated Azure VM in your Azure subscription. Regular synchronization occurs between the CS and MA Portal

Master Target (MT):

Target for replicating disks of on-premises servers. Installed within a dedicated Azure VM in your Azure subscription. Disks are attached to the MT to maintain duplicate copies.

MA Portal:

Multitenant portal to discover, configure protection and migrate your on-premises workloads into Azure.

Customer Success with VMware Migration: TeleComputing

Driven to Save Costs

From Datacenters in Norway & Sweden, delivering 2,400 hosted applications to approximately 75,000 end users every day at more than 800 small and midsize businesses 10,000 VMs on 3,500 physical servers.

Needed to grow beyond current datacenter, but additional VMware licenses hugely expensive.

Chose to switch, but needed to move in small maintenance windows.

NetApp: Project Shift

Rapid Virtual Machine Conversion – Powered by the Array

Data ONTAP, FlexClone & WAFL

Process involves cloning the data blobs from one format to another, writing any unique differences as needed.

For VMware to Hyper-V, we clone from the flat VMDK into the new VHD/VHDX, writing any headers and metadata as needed.

Take a VMDK on an NFS data store and shift it to a VHD/VHDX in seconds.

Supports conversion of Windows Server & Linux, and latest versions of Hyper-V & vSphere.

Only writing the difference in the file format not the contents of the virtual disk itself.

Requires a NetApp storage device that is running Data ONTAP 8.2 or later, running in Cluster mode More info: https://communities.netapp.com/community/netapp-blogs/msenviro/blog/2013/08/02/mat-powered-by-project-shift , http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/MAT-powered-by-Shift-343f242d
