Cavity Development
• 1989: Nb cavity : Four prototypes at CERN
• 1992: 20 cavities, 3 vendors
• 1992: Change in technology from Nb to
Nb-Cu,
– 3 Vendors selected

Timeline
(Initial Development to Installation – 6 years)
• 1987: 4 vendor competition, B&W, TRW,
Dornier, Interatom (now ACCEL)
– 2 cavities each,
– tested at Cornell
– Facilities installation at Jlab started
• 1989: Order placed to Interatom (now ACCEL)
• 1990: Initial production rate 3 cav/month
• Oct 1990 : Full production rate 12 cav/month
– One vendor
• Early 93: Cavity order completed (338 cavities)
• May 93 : 28 modules installed in one linac
R&D With Industry Phase
Before LHC Approval
• Initial R&D with industry, 1991 – 1994
• 7 x 1.3m magnets/modules ordered from 5
firms
• 7 x 10 m long magnets/modules ordered
from 4 firms
• LHC approved in Dec 1994
After LHC Approval (1995)
Initial Stages
• The LHC requires 1200 cryomodules (15 m long) as compared to
the ILC’s 2000 modules (12 m long).
• There were three stages before the sizable “pre-construction” series
of 90 modules in 2001.
• Stage 1 start in October 1995:
– After design and modeling work at CERN, 3 prototype coils were built in
industry and modules assembled and tested at CERN.
• Stage 2 (summer 1998):
– Vendors assembled 9 modules (3 per vendor) at CERN using magnet
assembly facilities installed at CERN.
• Stage 3: Beginning of Pre-series of 90 modules (end of 2002)
– Vendors then manufactured a total of about 20 modules (7 per vendor).
About 6 of these were fully tested (2 per vendor). Pre-series production
released
• In all, a total of 32 modules were prepared by the CERN/industrial
collaboration before releasing the pre-series production of 90.
1200 cryomodules, 1 B$ scale, smaller but comparable to ILC Main Linac Scale
