Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Improving Our Future by Degrees in Oklahoma’s Second Century Dr. Linda Mason COORDINATOR FOR GRANT WRITING AND EXTERNAL FUNDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Grantwriting? • Research – – – – One committed person – contagious enthusiasm Important pedagogy Recruitment of top notch students Make original contributions and test them • Program development • Curriculum revision • Enhance facilities GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Grantwriting? • • • • Involve students Professional development – improve yourself Something needs to be done Engage in grant writing prior to going to first job • Experiment – try something new! GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Grantwriting? • Important to submit proposals within 2-3 years of starting teaching career: funding agency won’t readily grant to experienced teacher who is a non-researcher. • Oklahoma does not have enough state money to significantly improve higher education GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Time Management? • Most 2 year schools in Oklahoma have a standard 15 credit hour per semester teaching assignment • Most 4 year schools have a standard 12 credit hour per semester teaching assignment GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Time Management? • • • • • • Teaching preparation is extra Student advisement is extra Committees are extra Professional affiliation is extra Research is extra Grantwriting is extra…. GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Time Management? • Sleep is extra!!! GRANTWRITING TIME MANAGEMENT Why Time Management? • Must organize existing time rather than find additional time • Something will have to be eliminated! Next… • Reorganize the day • Put things back to back • Plan at the beginning • Shut your door CREATE TIME…. • Eliminate something Base this on priorities --Keep what you are obligated to do Keep what you really like Keep what keeps you sane and healthy BE REASONABLE! USE NEW TIME…. Now that you have organized so you have some time…. USE NEW TIME…. • Organize grantwriting into small steps • Search first • Read first • Learn first • Make an outline first • Use small time blocks CANNOT DO IT…. • “Too tall an order, I cannot!” • Think about it again later. GET HELP…. • Go to chair or dean for suggestions • Take chart to colleague • Set up a discussion group GET HELP…. • Use students to help –Research –Training others –Lab or classroom setup –Routine duties –Pay, credit, internship GET HELP…. • Ask for assistant or other help • Get support from others • Lobby administration in numbers • Change culture from within MAKE THE EFFORT • Make an attempt • Make a commitment – 2 semesters • Start with small changes – don’t set yourself up for failure with too high expectations MAKE THE EFFORT Prioritize – the time will follow!
