UV adhesives of different refractive
indices
•
•
•
•
•
NOA138 (1.38)
NOA84 (1.46)
NOA74 (1.52)
NOA63 (1.56)
These UV curable adhesives would be used to
fill the AGILEs
• We already have PDMS 1.4, polyester resin
1.48, epoxy 1.55
• So we can has as many as 9 layers including ice
and high index glass
24 x 22mm Monocrystalline Solar Cell

22/
• As a visible light detector for AGILE setup
Spectral Transmission Measurements
• Spectrophotometer measurements for different
film samples to characterize the optical
adhesives and the polymers in the Fejer lab
(nano 011)
• Optical adhesives will be put between two glass
slabs with a spacer to make thin films and then
this can be used a specimen for the
transmission measurements for the polymers
that are not characterized

Testing the optical adhesives of
different RI
• All except NO138 (RI of
1.38) behave well and
are ready for
characterization
• The NO 84 does how a
lot of shrinking which is
only a problem in this
closed test structure
and not in agile
• NO 63 and NO74
behave well
NOA138

Aliphatic Urethane Acrylate* * 5-20% and Acrylate Monomer * 40%-85%
The layer becomes cloudy and yellowish after UV cure, this layer is thick of
about 1mm.
On closer inspection, the adhesive exhibits oxygen inhibition when used as
a coating. To overcome this the adhesive must be cured under an inert
atmosphere, such as nitrogen.

Filling the first arrays
Next steps
• First Al array is being filled (flexible clean room is going to be
cleaned so it’s a real clean room this week hence the fabrication
schedule is push back by almost a week). In this time I am working
on characterizing the adhesive films in Spectrophotometer
• The back to back structure is being make by Tim Brand in the
Crystal shop
• The solar detector is tested and will be used in the housing (like in
CAD drawing) to test the AGILEs once they are make
• Thorlabs red HeNe laser will be used to test the structures
