THE SEVEN ALARMS OF HEBREWS
Romans 15:4 For whatever things were written
before were written for our learning, that we
through the patience and comfort of the
Scriptures might have hope.
1. Drifting from the Word
Hebrews 2:1 Therefore 2 For if the word spoken
through angels proved steadfast, and every
transgression and disobedience received a just
reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so
great a salvation, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by
those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness
both with signs and wonders, with various
miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to
His own will?
Galatians 3:19 What purpose then does the law
serve? It was added because of transgressions,
till the Seed should come to whom the promise
was made; and it was appointed through angels
by the hand of a mediator.
Acts 7:52 "Which of the prophets did your fathers
not persecute? And they killed those who foretold
the coming of the Just One, of whom you now
have become the betrayers and murderers, 53
"who have received the law by the direction of
angels and have not kept it."
Several examples of heavenly angels being
involved with man.
•Two angels warned Lot’s family to flee Sodom
and Gomorrah (Gen. 19).
• The angel Gabriel delivered a revelation to
Daniel about the 70 weeks in (Dan. 9).
• Gabriel also announced the birth of John the
Baptist and Jesus (Lk. 1).
• An angel instructed Cornelius to send for Peter
so he could hear the words that would save him
(Acts 11:13-14).
Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits
sent forth to minister for those who will inherit
salvation?
Consequences of ignoring God’s Word
• The man that was picking up sticks on the
Sabbath was put to death because his actions
broke the Law of the Sabbath (Ex. 20:8).
• In 2 Samuel 24, David numbered his people
when he was not supposed to, so 70,000 of his
people were struck dead by a deadly plague.
3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a
salvation, which at the first began to be spoken
by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those
who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both
with signs and wonders, with various miracles,
and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own
will?
we must give the more earnest heed to the things
we have heard, lest we drift away.
2. Doubting the Word
Hebrews 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:
"Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 Do not
harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day
of trial in the wilderness, 9 Where your fathers
tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty
years. 10 Therefore I was angry with that
generation, And said, 'They always go astray in
their heart, And they have not known My ways.'
11 So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter
My rest.' " 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in
any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing
from the living God;
13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called
"Today," lest any of you be hardened through the
deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become
partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our
confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is
said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not
harden your hearts as in the rebellion." 16 For
who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not
all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now
with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not
with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the
wilderness?
18 And to whom did He swear that they would
not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?
19 So we see that they could not enter in because
of unbelief. 4:1 Therefore, since a promise
remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of
you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed
the gospel was preached to us as well as to them;
but the word which they heard did not profit
them, not being mixed with faith in those who
heard it.
1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I do not
want you to be unaware that all our fathers were
under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all
were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the
sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all
drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of
that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that
Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God
was not well pleased, for their bodies were
scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things
became our examples, to the intent that we
should not lust after evil things as they also
lusted.
7 And do not become idolaters as were some of
them. As it is written, "The people sat down to
eat and drink, and rose up to play." 8 Nor let us
commit sexual immorality, as some of them did,
and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor
let us tempt Christ, as some of them also
tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor
complain, as some of them also complained, and
were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all
these things happened to them as examples, and
they were written for our admonition, upon
whom the ends of the ages have come. 12
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed
lest he fall.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your
heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall
direct your paths. 7 Do not be wise in your own
eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. 8 It
will be health to your flesh, And strength to your
bones.
Heb. 4:1 Therefore, since a promise remains of
entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem
to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel
was preached to us as well as to them; but the
word which they heard did not profit them, not
being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
3. Dullness toward the Word
Hebrews 5:11 of whom we have much to say, and
hard to explain, since you have become dull of
hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to
be teachers, you need someone to teach you
again the first principles of the oracles of God;
and you have come to need milk and not solid
food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk
is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is
a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who
are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to discern both good
and evil.
2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you
in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
3 as His divine power has given to us all things
that pertain to life and godliness, through the
knowledge of Him who called us by glory and
virtue, 4 by which have been given to us
exceedingly great and precious promises, that
through these you may be partakers of the divine
nature, having escaped the corruption that is in
the world through lust. 5 But also for this very
reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith
virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge selfcontrol, to self-control perseverance, to
perseverance godliness,
7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to
brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are
yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor
unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is
shortsighted, even to blindness, and has
forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to
make your call and election sure, for if you do
these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an
entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into
the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ.
THE SEVEN ALARMS OF HEBREWS
4. Departing from the Word
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of
the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to
perfection, not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works and of faith toward
God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of
hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal
judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.
Matthew 7:24 " Therefore whoever hears these
sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him
to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
25 "and the rain descended, the floods came, and
the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did
not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 "But
everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and
does not do them, will be like a foolish man who
built his house on the sand: 27 "and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew
and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was
its fall."
Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were
once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift,
and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and
have tasted the good word of God and the powers of
the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them
again to repentance, since they crucify again for
themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open
shame. 7 For the earth which drinks in the rain that
often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those
by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God;
8 but if it bears thorns and briars, it is rejected and
near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.
9 But, beloved, we are confident of better things
concerning you, yes, things that accompany
salvation, though we speak in this manner.
10 For God is not unjust to forget your work and
labor of love which you have shown toward His name,
in that you have ministered to the saints, and do
minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you
show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope
until the end, 12 that you do not become sluggish,
but imitate those who through faith and patience
inherit the promises. 13 For when God made a
promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no
one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, "Surely
blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will
multiply you." 15 And so, after he had patiently
endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men
indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for
confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.
17 Thus God, determining to show more
abundantly to the heirs of promise the
immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an
oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which
it is impossible for God to lie, we might have
strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to
lay hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope
we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and
steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind
the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for
us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek.
5. Despising the Word
Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we
have received the knowledge of the truth, there
no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a
certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery
indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28
Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without
mercy on the testimony of two or three
witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment,
do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who
has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted
the blood of the covenant by which he was
sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit
of grace?
30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is
Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The
LORD will judge His people." 31 It is a fearful
thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32 But recall the former days in which, after you
were illuminated, you endured a great struggle
with sufferings: 33 partly while you were made a
spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations,
and partly while you became companions of those
who were so treated; 34 for you had compassion
on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the
plundering of your goods, knowing that you have
a better and an enduring possession for
yourselves in heaven.
35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence,
which has great reward. 36 For you have need of
endurance, so that after you have done the will of
God, you may receive the promise: 37 "For yet a
little while, And He who is coming will come and
will not tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back, My soul has no
pleasure in him." 39 But we are not of those who
draw back to perdition, but of those who believe
to the saving of the soul.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful
and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.
29 Of how much worse punishment, do you
suppose, will he be thought worthy who has
trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the
blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified
a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Luke 9:62 No one, having put his hand to the
plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of
God."
6. Defying the Word
Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and
holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the
grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing
up cause trouble, and by this many become
defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane
person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold
his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward,
when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was
rejected, for he found no place for repentance,
though he sought it diligently with tears.
18 For you have not come to the mountain that
may be touched and that burned with fire, and to
blackness and darkness and tempest, 19 and the
sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so
that those who heard it begged that the word
should not be spoken to them anymore. 20 (For
they could not endure what was commanded:
"And if so much as a beast touches the mountain,
it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow." 21 And
so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I am
exceedingly afraid and trembling.")
Matthew 16:26 "For what profit is it to a man if
he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
7. Dishonoring the Word
Hebrews 12:25 See that you do not refuse Him who
speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who
spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we
turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, 26
whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has
promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not only the
earth, but also heaven." 27 Now this, "Yet once more,"
indicates the removal of those things that are being
shaken, as of things that are made, that the things
which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore,
since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be
shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God
acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our
God is a consuming fire.
Matthew 27:51 Then, behold, the veil of the
temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and
the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,
