A new partnership to prepare teachers for
high-need urban schools

Effective Teaching
◦ The ODU - Teacher Immersion Residency is a
partnership between Norfolk Public Schools and
Portsmouth Public Schools and ODU, designed to
meet the specific staffing needs of the division.
◦ The teacher immersion residency program is
embedded in the classrooms of the urban school
divisions.
◦ Residents are apprenticed to experienced
teachers who serve as their mentors.
◦ Residents spend 7 weeks in a state-of-the-art
Immersion Internship in the content discipline.
The Federal Government has recently dedicated
millions of dollars to fund 28 new Teacher Quality
Partnership Grants. The Old Dominion UniversityTeacher Immersion Residency Program is one of these
new, federally funded efforts.

meet the needs of youth attending middle
and high school in an urban school!




Recruit highly qualified candidates as Residents, including
individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups.
Prepare highly qualified teachers through a content-enriched,
technology-infused, urban school-based secondary
education teacher residency program.
Support and retain in high-needs schools at least 10
Residents per academic year through intensive induction,
evidence-based mentoring, and professional development
over one-year pre-service and three years in-service (as
required by VA law.)
Improve student achievement in classes led by Residents in
participating high-needs schools.

Dual Enrollment Courses
Other models take candidates who have
academic content knowledge, and give them
real-world teacher training and rigorous
education coursework. The ODU-TIR program
will take those candidates with content
knowledge, and give them that superior teaching
training – but then also give them more content,
and the training required for them to teach dual
enrollment courses (college-credit courses) in an
urban school.



Employment-Students who successfully complete
the program will be guaranteed a teaching position
in Norfolk Public Schools or Portsmouth Public
Schools.
ODU-TIR requires RESIDENTS to teach in a highneed Norfolk Public School or a high-need
Portsmouth Public School for 3 years upon program
completion.
Induction Support-For three years post-graduation,
each RESIDENT is mentored by an experienced
teacher and RESIDENT coach.






ODU-TIR pays full tuition and fees for all
RESIDENTS
Stipend of $25,500 over 12 months
Laptop computer with student software
Wireless card
Professional Development funds for
travel/expenses up to $1,000 per RESIDENT
RESIDENTS are eligible for additional funds under
the federal TEACH grant
***Financial terms are not need-based***






Bachelor’s degree in high needs subject from an
accredited institution.
Undergraduate GPA in major of 3.0 or higher.
Evidence of successful work or volunteer experiences
with high need/urban youth
Passing scores* on the Praxis I, or Virginia State
Board of Education-approved SAT/ACT scores or
combined VCLA composite score and Praxis 1 math.
Passing scores* on Praxis II.
Passing scores* on Virginia Communication and
Literacy Assessment (VCLA).
*
Passing scores as defined by the Virginia Board of
Education when the candidate applies for admission.





Score of at least 1,000 (Verbal + Quantitative)
combined on Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Completion of ODU’s online application, including
supporting documentation, by the appropriate
deadlines.
Satisfactory score on the Gallup’s TeacherInsight™
Pass criminal background check and evidence of
immunizations and TB testing with negative results
Successful interview with the Teacher Residents
Admission Board.




or Social Studies
