• About 40,000 Americans die from lung scarring, or
fibrosis, each year.
• The scarring causes lung tissue to thicken and interferes
with the lungs’ ability to transfer oxygen into the
bloodstream.
• Symptoms of scarring include shortness of breath,
chronic cough, and fatigue.

• UTHSCT’s Texas Lung Injury Institute:
– Over the past few years, Dr. Steve Idell has been
investigating a particular “clot-busting” drug called
scuPA (pronounced “scoopa”) which helps prevent
lung scarring.
– UTHSCT is thrilled that the National Heart, Lung, and
Blood Institute at the NIH recently notified Dr. Idell
that the NIH will begin manufacturing scuPA for
clinical trials. Trials are targeted to begin in 2014.

The University of Texas
Health Science Center at Tyler - Education
• UTHSCT is the only UT campus that does not offer its
own degrees.
• That is about to change, as UTHSCT plans to make
UTHSCT a destination of learning for students in
Northeast Texas.
• In 2012, UTHSCT is preparing to submit an application
for accreditation to the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools (SACS), our regional accrediting agency.

– Seek Federal financial aid (Title IV funds).
– Transfer college credit to and from our institution.
• SACS Accreditation will promote:
