GRAMMAR – LESSON 6
‫( هذه‬this)
‫ هذه‬is a demonstrative pronoun. It is the feminine version
of ‫ هذا‬. ‫ هذا‬is used to refer to masculine nouns whilst ‫ هذه‬is
used to refer to feminine nouns.
For example:
ٌ
‫مدرسة‬
‫هذا مسج ٌد و هذه‬
This is a Mosque and this is a school
HOW
TO
MAKE
NOUNS AND
FEMININE
ADJECTIVES
Previously we learned as a general rule, nouns ending with a taa-marbootha
( ‫ ) ة‬are feminine, however, there are exceptions to this rule.
Some nouns that do not end with the ‫ ة‬are also considered feminine.
For example:
Pot - ٌ‫القدر‬
The Earth – ُ‫األرض‬
The hand – ‫الي ُد‬
Also, some nouns that end with ‫ ة‬are considered masculine.
For example:
The name ‫ أسامة‬Usama
As you are learning new nouns you will also need to learn it’s gender
In general though, nouns and adjectives are made feminine by
adding the ‫ة‬. The last letter before the ‫ ة‬takes a fattah.
For example:
Noun -
Masculine: ٌ‫مدرس‬
Feminine: ‫مدرس ٌة‬
َ
Adjective -
Masculine: ‫جمي ٌل‬
Feminine: ‫جمي َل ٌة‬
Body parts that are found in pairs are feminine whilst single body
parts are masculine.
‫مؤنث‬
‫يد‬
‫رجل‬
‫أذن‬
‫عين‬
‫مذكر‬
‫رأس‬
‫أنف‬
‫فم‬
‫وجه‬
‫ل‬
‫ ل‬is a preposition which means ‘for, belongs to..’ The noun that it
enters upon becomes majroor.
For example:
‫هذا القل ُم لحامد‬
‫هذا القلم للمدرس‬
If ‫ ل‬is attached to a noun that begins with the definite article ‫ ال‬then
the ‫ ا‬from the ‫ال‬is dropped and the preposition ‫ ل‬is attached to the ‫ل‬
from the definite article ‫ال‬.
For example:
ُ‫ المدرس‬becomes ‫للمدرس‬
However, if the ‫ ل‬is attached to word like ‫ هللا‬then the ‫ ا‬is dropped from
the beginning but no ‫ ل‬is added. It simply changes to ‫لل‬.
‫ ل َمن‬means: Whose
‫ لمن هذا الكتاب؟‬: Whose is this book?
‫أيضا‬
‫ أيضا‬means: ‘also’
For example:
‫هذا قل ٌم جدي ٌد و ذلك أيضا قلم ٌجدي ٌد‬
This is a new pen and that is also a new pen
‫جدا‬
‫ جدا‬means: ‘very’
For example:
ٌ
‫ثقيلة جدا‬
‫هذه الحقيب ُة‬
This bag is very heavy
