Animal Relief Prints
Dorothy McEntee’s Tabby
The artist Dorothy McEntee made a
type of art called a print. This is a relief
print of her pet cat asleep on a chair.
Dorothy McEntee made
drawings and prints
about everyday life.
This print is called
“Monday, Pikeland.”
What is happening here?
A relief print is made from a raised
surface. All the areas that will be blank
(the negative space) are cut away and
only the raised part (the positive form)
is inked.
Do you see all of the
white lines and shapes?
That is where the
printing plate was cut or
dented.
Think of an animal that
you want to draw for
your print, then draw it
on a sheet of paper.
Where does the animal
live?
What is it doing?
Is the animal a pet or a
wild creature?
Can you think of an
interesting texture to
add to the negative
space?
Fill up the
whole
picture
space.
What do these lines show?
One plate was
made for the
blue color and
another one
was made for
the black. The
white color is
the paper.
