Outline
Who are we?
– What is Knowledge
Mobilization?
What do we do?
- Suite of Services
Why is it important?
- Value? Impact?
2
Maximize the Impact of Research: Martha Piper (2002)
“We must translate our
research findings in the
human sciences into public
policy and social programs”
“Knowledge Transfer in the
human sciences – the
transfer of findings into
policy and programs – is as
important as technology
transfer in the engineering
and natural sciences.”

Definitions: Knowledge Mobilization
Knowledge Mobilization: A suite of services that enhances
the two-way connection between researchers and research
users so that research and evidence can inform decisions
about public policy and professional practice. Knowledge
mobilization encompasses methods of knowledge transfer,
translation and exchange and extends them to include the
co-production of knowledge. Knowledge mobilization turns
research into action.
Knowledge mobilization (the how) enables social
innovation (the what).
4
Definitions: ResearchImpact
ResearchImpact is Canada’s
emerging knowledge
mobilization (KM) network.
ResearchImpact provides KM
services that connect
university researchers with
community and government
organizations to support the
use of research in decisionmaking about social
programming, public policy
and professional practice.

Homeless Hub: Stephen Gaetz
Homelessness is a national problem
associated with poverty, equity
mental health and addiction.
Homelessness and shelters are also
a determinant of pandemic spread It
is a problem for researchers,
community organizations, NGOs,
faith groups and governments. The
Homelessness Hub is an on line
clearinghouse of research
(academic, policy and grey
literature), stories and resources to
inform public policy and social
programming.

Working to Eradicate Bullying: Deb Pepler
Bullying is a relationship problem that
may carry through adolescence and
into adulthood in the form of
aggression, sexual harassment, dating
aggression, and substance use.
Working on the determinants
interventions and treatments for bullies
and victims of bullying, Deb Pepler
works with researchers, governments
and NGOs to enhance awareness,
build research capacity, assess
bullying problems and promote
evidence-based programs and
effective policies across Canada.

Knowledge Mobilization - Lessons Learning
Combination of producer
push & user pull =
exchange & co-production
Centred around the
“knowledge broker” and
institutional capacity
Is NOT SSH technology
transfer
Is MORE than a website or
a brochure
Takes resources ($ and
time)
TO BE LEARNED
•Evaluation of Impact
•Sustainability
