Knowledge Mobilization is turning research into action Michael Johnny, Manager Knowledge Mobilization Unit York University Outline Who are we? – What is Knowledge Mobilization? What do we do? - Suite of Services Why is it important? - Value? Impact? 2 Maximize the Impact of Research: Martha Piper (2002) “We must translate our research findings in the human sciences into public policy and social programs” “Knowledge Transfer in the human sciences – the transfer of findings into policy and programs – is as important as technology transfer in the engineering and natural sciences.” 3 Definitions: Knowledge Mobilization Knowledge Mobilization: A suite of services that enhances the two-way connection between researchers and research users so that research and evidence can inform decisions about public policy and professional practice. Knowledge mobilization encompasses methods of knowledge transfer, translation and exchange and extends them to include the co-production of knowledge. Knowledge mobilization turns research into action. Knowledge mobilization (the how) enables social innovation (the what). 4 Definitions: ResearchImpact ResearchImpact is Canada’s emerging knowledge mobilization (KM) network. ResearchImpact provides KM services that connect university researchers with community and government organizations to support the use of research in decisionmaking about social programming, public policy and professional practice. 5 KM = producer push, user pull, exchange and co-production Knowledge Mobilization Research Summaries Research Translation Producer Push (KT) User Exchange (KE) Pull Research Translation (KT) co-production partnerships Research Partnerships Incentive grants Release time Matching $ KM Interns CBR Research Forums KM in AM Community based research 6 Partnerships for KM throughout the Research Cycle Plan Consultation Wikis, blogs Partnerships Web site Research forum Town hall Theatre Posters Policy brief public policy Disseminate PSA professional practice Execute Practice guideline Populations Popular press Intervention studies Clinical practice Social Marketing Internships Evaluate Researcher exchange Surveys, case studies, expert panelists 7 KM Case Studies 1.
