ROMANS CHAPTER 8
• Begins with No Condemnation
• Ends with No Separation
• In between No Defeat
F. Godet (1812-1900)
PRINCIPLES FROM 8:1-11
• God’s holy, righteous and good law cannot justify
or sanctify a person
• By God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ
Christians are rescued from God’s condemnation
• By God’s grace all Christians are in dwelt by,
controlled by, and owned by Jesus Christ
• By God’s grace the Holy Spirit transforms
Christians to produce fruit exalting Jesus Christ
• By God’s grace the Holy Spirit makes the
Christian’s resurrection as certain as Christ’s
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of
the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus
from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has
done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could
not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of
sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the
flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement
of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not
according to the flesh but according to the
Spirit.
8:5 For those who live according to the flesh
set their minds on the things of the flesh,
but those who live according to the Spirit set
their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For
to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to
set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is
hostile to God, for it does not submit to
God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who
are in the flesh cannot please God.
8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the
Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you,
although the body is dead because of sin, the
Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the
Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead
dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from
the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies
through his Spirit who dwells in you.
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law
of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ
Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God
has done what the law, weakened by the flesh,
could not do. By sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he
condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the
righteous requirement of the law might be
fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the
flesh but according to the Spirit.
• Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they
did not honor him as God or give thanks to him,
but they became futile in their thinking, and their
foolish hearts were darkened.
• Romans 3:10 “None is righteous, no, not
one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for
God. 18 “There is no fear of God before their
eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the law
says it speaks to those who are under the law, so
that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole
world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by
works of the law no human being will be justified
in his sight, since through the law comes
knowledge of sin.
• 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you as of
first importance what I also received: that
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the
Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was
raised on the third day in accordance with the
Scriptures
• 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him
to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we
might become the righteousness of God.
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of
the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus
from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has
done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could
not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of
sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the
flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement
of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not
according to the flesh but according to the
Spirit.
• Zechariah 4:6 Then he said to me,
“This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by
power, but by my Spirit, says the
LORD of hosts.
• Matthew 22:37 And he said to him, “You
shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind. 38 This is the great and first
commandment. 39 And a second is like
it: You shall love your neighbor as
yourself. 40 On these two
commandments depend all the Law and
the Prophets.”
• Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness,
self-control; against such things there is
no law. 24 And those who belong to
Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with
its passions and desires. 25 If we live by
the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
• 1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your
body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you,
whom you have from God? You are not your
own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So
glorify God in your body.
• Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and
you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the
Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against
the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to
keep you from doing the things you want to do.
