OBJECTIVES OF A
CHIP SEAL




Provides a wearing course
Waterproofs surface
Seals small surface cracks
Improves skid resistance
2
WHEN TO USE A CHIP SEAL
— DISTRESS:
 Minor alligator cracking
 Severe alligator cracking (temporary)
 Transverse cracking (crack seal first)
 Longitudinal cracking (crack seal first)
 Raveling
 Patches (will reduce raveling)
 Improve ride & skid resistance

REMEMBER :



CHIP SEALS DO NOT STRENGTHEN
EXISTING PAVEMENTS OR
INCREASE THEIR ABILITY TO
CARRY LOADS
THEY DO NOT SMOOTH OUT
ROUGH PAVEMENTS
THEY DO NOT ELEMINATE THE
NEED FOR MAINTENANCE OR
POSSIBLY RECONSTRUCTION
4
WITH THE EXCEPTION
OF SKID RESISTANCE,
A CHIP SEAL CANNOT
IMPROVE AN EXISTING
PAVEMENT……..
IT CAN ONLY PREVENT
IT FROM GETTING
WORSE

AC15-5TR is a product of
TRMAC™
AC15-5TR stands for:
AC = Asphalt Cement
15 = 1500ps, minimum absolute viscosity @ 140°F
5TR = 5% tire rubber loading
9
AC-15P
AC-15P stands for:
AC = Asphalt Cement
15 = 1500ps, minimum absolute viscosity @ 140°F
P = Polymer

HOT OILS exhibits:



Cold Temperature Flexibility
Excellent Adhesive Strengths
Excellent Cohesive Strengths

Chip seal applications using Hot Oils:





Do not require lengthy cure times to set
Traffic can be allowed back onto the surface after
pneumatic rollers have made two to three passes
Excess aggregate can be broomed the same day,
after the binder has cooled sufficiently.
Pavement markings can also be restored same day.
Have an average production rate of five to six
transport truck loads per day, using:
Two distributors
 one chip spreader
 four pneumatic rollers

13
“Hot Applied” chip seal
application rates will vary:
Depending on the condition of the
road surface and its “hunger factor”
and traffic volume (vehicles per day)
14
Typical application criteria for “hot
applied” chip seals are as follows:
Asphalt application temperature:
330 to 370°F
Surface temperature:
75°F and rising
Aggregate Type:
1/2” - 1/4”
Precoated
Application rates:
0.45+ gal/sq.
yd
Aggregate Type:
3/8” - 1/4”
Precoated
Application Rates:
0.38+ gal/sq.

COATED AGGREGATES





Coat with PG64-22 asphalt binder
90% coating (this is a change from 98%)
Dryer Temp 190-230 degrees
Cool to under 140 degrees before stockpiling
Excessive clumping my require re-screening
Stockpile, cool, and cure aggregates at least 1
week before application.

Surface temperature needs to be 75 F and
climbing
Air temperature 70 F or higher
Oil temperature should be applied between 330370 F
Absolutely dry conditions

POWER BROOMING



Depending on width minimum of 4 brooms
should be used
Brooming can occur as soon as surface temps
drop sufficiently to eliminate displacement of
aggregate. Water can be used to help cool the
surface.
Brooming needs to be completed in both
directions.

APPLICATION BROBLEMS





Moisture is not hot oils friend
Hot oils have a problem covering old striping
and legends
Quality Workmanship is very important
Changes in pavement and steep grades can flush
if not applied at the correct oil rate
Crack Seal materials are heated and can be
displaced when rolled. Additional rock can be
applied.
