Spicer at the podium 1990 – Summit County CBCF Groundbreaking 1991 – Summit County Community Based Correctional Facility Construction 1992 Summit CBCF Opens The 100-bed Summit County CBCF opened in 1992 for male and female felony offenders Community Based Correctional Facilities (CBCF) • There are 18 CBCFs in Ohio • Oriana House operates three CBCFs; they are in Summit, Seneca, and Cuyahoga Counties • Funded by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction • CBCFs are the most restrictive sentencing option in the range of community based sanctions • Address issues of cognitive/behavior, chemical dependency, education, employment, family relationships 1992 The Employment Placement Program is developed to assist clients with job referrals and pre-employment classes 1992 – Residential Correctional Center opens on Power Street in Akron 1993 – Female CBCF clients move to Power Street Ohio Lt. Akron City Prosecutor Doug Powley addresses the court. Judge Marvin Shapiro presides over Akron Municipal Drug Court Judge Alison McCarty presides over Akron Municipal Drug Court’s ninth anniversary 1995 – Terrence Mann Residential Center opens on Glenwood campus in Akron providing additional male work release and halfway house beds 1996 • Oriana House Administration offices move to Buchtel Ave. in Akron • Drug Court, Day Reporting, Bail Supervision, and Home Incarceration move to West Market Street in Akron • The Chemical Dependency Treatment Center and a Drug Lab are built on the Glenwood Campus in Akron • The Summit County Prosecutor’s Pretrial Diversion Program partners with Oriana House 1997 - The Special Housing Adjustment Residential Program (SHARP) is developed to provide a link between the mental health and the criminal justice systems 1998 • The Discretionary Rehabilitation Program (DRP) is started as a selective intervention program for first time misdemeanant offenders from Akron Municipal Court • Family Violence Court is established to provide a specialized level of supervision to domestic violence offenders 1998 – Oriana House expands to Central/Northwest Ohio with the groundbreaking of the CROSSWAEH CBCF CROSSWAEH construction - 1999 The 54-bed CROSSWAEH CBCF opens in 1999 to serve the counties of Crawford, Richland, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, Wyandot, Ashland, Erie, and Huron 1999 - CROSSWAEH Grand Opening 1999 – Groundbreaking for the Cliff Skeen Community Based Correctional Facility for Women 2000 – Oriana House begins operating Midtown Apartments in Akron for AMHA to provide single-unit housing for homeless adults The Community Corrections and Treatment Center Opens in Cleveland in 2001 2001 – CCTC Grand Opening Fannie M. Lewis Community Corrections & Treatment Center Cleveland 2001 - Cliff Skeen Community Based Correctional Facility (CBCF) for Women opens in Akron 2001 Cliff Skeen CBCF for Women Summit County Grand Opening 2001 – A new facility housing the kitchen, Driver Intervention Program, and the drug lab opens in Akron on the Glenwood Campus 2002 Felony Drug Court is established in Summit County Court of Common Pleas 2003 - Family Violence Court receives the American Correctional Association’s Exemplary Offender Program Award SCRAM Program begins - 2004 Secure Remote Alcohol Monitoring Program (SCRAM) provides 24/7 monitoring of offenders to determine their use of alcohol. 2007 CROSSWAEH CBCF for women opens in Tiffin, Ohio serving nine counties 2007 – CROSSWAEH CBCF for Women Grand Opening 2007 The Cleveland Transition Center opens in Cleveland as a residential pilot program with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and Oriana House Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Awards 2007 – The Clifford Skeen Award for Community Based Correctional Facilities to CROSSWAEH 2008 – The Clifford Skeen Award for Halfway Houses 2009 The Beginnings project provides housing and supportive services to low income adults with mental, emotional, and/or physical disabilities. 2009 Judge Nancy R. McDonnell Community Based Correctional Facility Groundbreaking Cleveland Judge Nancy R. McDonnell CBCF Groundbreaking 2009 2010 – North Star Neighborhood Reentry Resource Center opens in Cleveland North Star Neighborhood Reentry Resource Center Services offered through North Star address certain factors proven to reduce recidivism: •Encouraging a prosocial attitude •Associating with prosocial friends and family •Maintaining self-control •Utilizing problem solving skills •Addressing substance abuse •Improving employment readiness 2010 James J. Lawrence, President/CEO of Oriana House, Inc., was presented with the 2010 Margaret Mead Award, the highest honor presented by the International Community Corrections Association 2011 –Judge Nancy R. McDonnell CBCF Opens Judge Nancy R. McDonnell CBCF Cuyahoga County 2011 This collaborative program with Oriana House, United Way of Summit County, Akron Community Foundation, and the Summit County Executive Office assists adult felony ex-offenders with reentry to society and the workforce. 2011 – Oriana House renovates the former St. Hedwig church property • Glenwood Assessment Center • Aftercare • Reentry Court • Family Violence Court 2011 - Community Residential Centers • Open in Cuyahoga County and Summit County • Provide temporary, transitional housing and some limited case management • For offenders under Parole, Post-Release Control and Transitional Control Supervision • Contract with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction 2011 Oriana House is selected by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to operate a new halfway house in Erie County, scheduled to open later this year Accreditations • 12 of Oriana House’s community corrections facilities are accredited by the American Correctional Association • American Correctional Association (ACA) standards are the national benchmark for the effective operation of correctional systems throughout the United States and are necessary to ensure that correctional facilities are operated professionally Certification The agency’s residential and nonresidential chemical dependency treatment programs are certified by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services The Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations has certified Oriana House under the Ohio Nonprofits Standards for Excellence Oriana House’s drug and alcohol testing lab is certified by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act Licensure • Licensing is granted by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to all funded programs By the Numbers… • 1,246 total residential beds • 1,461 current nonresidential clients • 15,839 chemical dependency treatment clients in 2010 • 5,906 nonresidential community corrections clients in 2010 • 6,266 residential community corrections clients in 2010 Oriana House is proud to be celebrating its 30th anniversary.
