Unit 1 Notes 1
Types of Matter
Quick Lab Activity
• With your lab parter, go to each of the 15
stations.
• For each station, observe the materials
put out and determine if it is a substance
or a mixture.
• If a substance, determine if it is an
element or a compound.
• If a mixture, determine if it is
heterogeneous or homogeneous.
Post Activity Questions
1) Which was the easiest category to
identify? Why?
2) What would you have to do to decide
whether a substance was an element or
compound?
3) How could you tell the difference
between homogeneous mixtures and a
substance?
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
• What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
• What is mass?
The amount of matter an object contains
SUBSTANCES
• A substance is
matter that has a
definite and
uniform
composition
• Substances have
identical
One type of “stuff”
intensive
properties.
MIXTURES
• A mixture is a physical
blend of two or more
substances. They can
be physically
separated.
• How can you
separate a
mixture?
One type of “stuff”
More than one
type of “stuff”
together
HETEROGENEOUS vs. HOMOGENEOUS
• There are two different types of
mixtures.
• A heterogeneous mixture is one that
has more than one phase (part of
uniform composition)
• A homogeneous mixture has only
one phase.

TYPES OF SUBSTANCES
• There are two different types of
substances:
AND
Substances
• Unlike mixtures, substances are
made of exactly one type of matter
throughout.
• How can you tell it isn’t a
homogeneous mixture (with one
phase?)
• They cannot have a variable
composition.
ELEMENTS
• An element is the simplest forms
of matter.
• Each element is represented by a
chemical symbol.
COMPOUNDS
• A compound is a substance that
can be separated into simpler
substances only by chemical
means
