How to Manage Projects and Products
Effectively with IBM Connections
Running my year Soc-Biz style
© 2013 IBM Corporation
It all started with a blog post...
6
© 2013 IBM Corporation
My personal blog: clevershutter.machadonet.us
7
© 2013 IBM Corporation
The goal was to describe the methodology I use to run my work life as a
social product manager.
8
© 2013 IBM Corporation
This is me:
9
© 2013 IBM Corporation
I had been looking for an effective work methodology for a long time.
10
© 2013 IBM Corporation
This is why:
11
© 2013 IBM Corporation
I am a nerd
12
© 2013 IBM Corporation
My job involves mainly tracking and driving
13
© 2013 IBM Corporation
I live in a work continuum.
14
© 2013 IBM Corporation
I needed a methodology that is:
Flexible
●
It must adapt to changing business priorities
●
It has to get around tool limitations
●
It must be able to produce a variety of constructs and artifacts to express business events
Simple
●
A few basic building blocks able to represent complexity through aggregation
●
Linear utilization patterns
●
A multi-modal, multi-device user interface
Intuitive
●
Must reflect the way I visualize my workload (to me it looks like an octopus)
●
Must allow me to navigate content based on how my brain works
●
Must be clear enough so anyone can use it
15

The methodology (it doesn't have a name yet) allows me to represent my
workload in terms of the work continuum.
16
© 2013 IBM Corporation
It also allows me to exercise my participation in the work continuum to
reach my goals for the year.
17
© 2013 IBM Corporation
This is Part 1 of a two-part story.
18
© 2013 IBM Corporation
Here's the methodology:

Clean the house

Map the workload
This and all dependent
elements in this diagram
are actual Connections
constructs.

Map the workload
22

Implement the map using IBM Connections
Leverage the social context
●
Implement the mind map that
represents my workload
●
Provides the multi-modal, multi-device
user interface that I need
Bring together people, data and processes
●
Bring in the relevant people into a
given business process when needed
●
Provides the situational awareness
needed to understand exactly where
each thread is going
●
Activities are the engine but all apps
are needed

Anchor tag
Since I work on Sametime and this
is 2013 I figured my tree-level tag
should reflect that.

Theme tags
My top-level theme tags
should be single-word tags
and as short as possible.
After all they're going to be
all over the place.

Define where
content goes within
an activity.

Context tags
Context tags match activity
sections on Connections.
When an entry applies to
more than one activity and
section I actually place the
entry on the most relevant
one.

Tuning your implementation
Activities
●
Between 4 and 8
●
Too few or too many will have a negative impact on the tag hierarchy
Sections
●
Defined by business need
●
Content must, for the most part, fit cleanly into a given section
Content
●
If something cannot be expressed as a single entry, to-do or comment it needs to be
broken down into pieces and tagged accordingly
Sub-threads
●
Good for short-term projects and implemented as “related” activities
●
A sub-thread should ha completion date earlier than the parent thread

Once the stage is set all you need to do is run it.

My next step is to refine the methodology with the new and exciting
capabilities from IBM Sametime 9 to fully exercise the notion of
relevance into the work continuum.
