The Tower of London

William the Conqueror

Fortress Tower base is attributed to
William 1. After the Norman Conquest of
England, William I began to erect
defensive castles to terrify the conquered
Anglo-Saxons. One of the biggest in the
year 1078 became Tower. The wooden fort
was replaced by a huge stone structure —
the great Tower.

White Tower

When the new King of England later
ordered chalk building, it was called the
White Tower. Later, under King Richard the
Lionheart, were built several towers of
different heights and two rows of powerful
fortifications. Around the fortress was dug
a deep moat, making it one of the most
impregnable fortresses in Europe .

Prison Tower

The first prisoner imprisoned in the Tower in 1190 ad. At that time,
the Tower-prison was intended for the people of noble birth and
high rank. Among the most honorable and high-ranking prisoners of
the tower were the Kings of Scotland and France, and members of
their families, as well as representatives of the aristocracy and the
clergy, pushed into a disgrace for treason. The walls of the Tower of
London also remember the many executions and murders: in the
tower were murdered Henry VI and the tauèrskie princes, 12-yearold Edward V and his younger brother Richard.
The prisoners were kept in the premises, which at that time were
not occupied. Time opinions were very different.

Tower zoo

In the 13 century, this castle was kept in
Lviv, then the Tower turned into a real
zoo. All the animals were kept for the fun
of the King. The Zoo existed until the year
1830. About 500 years in the tower was
the main branch of the Royal Mint.
