The Ghastly Anthology of
Terribly Bad Luck and
Horrid Misfortune
By L.S Hetherington
The best things in life are free… But so are the worst...

Slide 2

The world is full of wonderful, happy things, but every bright existence has
a dark side. The sea sparkles and glistens, waves rolling and gulls calling.
But how many lives has it taken? How many ships has it sunk? An
aeroplane takes innocent human beings to wherever they need to go, and
delivers them back to their homes. But what can go wrong? The writing
that follows acknowledges the dark side with a tilt of a vintage black top
hat and a smile of red-stained teeth.

Haiku
Hands held steadily
Machete raised readily
Time is running out…

Roam the gloomy streets
Psycho killer on the loose
Run run run away.

Ground getting closer
Roof fading into the sky
Too close to the edge.

So Much Depends On This Single Shot
So much depends on this single shot
Fatally fast and lethally sharp
Flying through the air

Red Wheelbarrow Style

Slide 5

The Kraken
Rum soaked pirates, caught by surprise
The captain dons his hat and cries
“Alas the dreaded black spot is here
The terrible beastie is upon us I fear”
Screaming crew, firing of guns
Being a pirate, now doesn’t seem fun
The cannons fire, the kraken just roars
Scrambling for boats, finding the oars
While tension rises to as high as can be
Blue as sky, the Caribbean Sea
Innocent gulls look on and call
The ship enters the deep, masts, sails and all.

The Woods at Night
At night unknown creatures crawl
At night the shadows slink
At night cruel fear enters us all
At night our hearts, they sink
At night the dark leaves hide a dozen eyes
At night the coldness seeps
At night the wind it screams and cries
At night death prowls and creeps
At night in the woods
At night a different place
At night its understood
Your steps you should retrace.

Struck by a moment

Slide 7

The Metal Beast
The wings of the beast did shudder and duck
It roared and hissed, run out of luck
It swished a pointy tail and shook a large strong head
Its heartbeat did rise
Blinking yellow eyes
The aeroplane was dead.

Metaphor

Shadows
Found to convene in the corner
Silently whisper away
Fester and spread at the coming of night
Recoil at the sight of the day.
They swallow whatever does near them
From children to puppies and toys
Slink over the floorboards with expertise ease
Smothering all forms of noise.
Lurking in the wardrobe
In nightmares coming alive
Concealing murderers and thieves
Taking what we need to survive.

Slide 9

The Monster
I am hiding
From a monster
In a house
That’s probably haunted
I am waiting
For the beast
To discover my hiding place
I am wondering
If he’s hungry
Will he eat me up
As I sit here
I am fearing
The nightfall
When the world will become dark

Present continuous tense

Water and Falls

The reeds swish and sway
The clock ticks away
Eddying water rushes on past
The debris is large and shoots by so
fast
The old wooden structure is bruised
and sore
The wise, waving trees look on in
awe
Drifting farther away from the land
Floating out deeper than originally
planned
They start to spin
Their chances are slim
But they come to a stop
Held fast by a rock

extra

Looking down into a whirlpool of
trouble
Fears on the rise and terror does
bubble
The birds start to cackle, one and
then all
The wooden base crumbles and the
boat starts to fall
The wind is rising, its volume at top
Time itself has come to a stop
Their lives flash before their eyes
The oldest one screams, the younger
one cries
The rocks at the bottom snarl with
glee
What happens next may be
frightening to see.
