Compare Metric Length
Unit of Study: Length in Metric Measure
Global Concept Guide: _3__ of _3__
Content Development
 Students will solve addition and subtraction problems by
drawing a picture that directly models the problem. The quick
picture should help students determine the correct operation to
use when they write a number sentence for the problem.
 When students are comparing lengths it is essential that they
realize that the objects must be measured using the same unit
in order write a number sentence to compare the objects.
Day 1
 The focus for the day is to using quick pictures to solve
problems that involve length.
 Teachers should expect that all students will draw quick
pictures to directly model the math problems.
 Under lesson ideas there is a link called “Problem Solving
Metric” that could be used for the lesson on this day.
Day 2
 The focus of this lesson is to use number lines to solve math
problems involving length.
 Lesson 9.4 in the GoMath book has problems that could be used
with the students.
 It is important that students are comfortable with using and
understanding number lines. Number lines is an essential
strategy that students need to master.
Day 3
 The focus of this day is to find the difference between lengths of
different objects using strategies like number lines and quick
pictures.
 GoMath lesson 9.7 could be used to provide activities to
reinforce this concept.
 To extend student thinking students could compare the lengths
of the objects using <, =, and > to reinforce the concept.
Day 4
 The focus of this day is for students to use estimation to check
the reasonableness of their answers. If students have a general
idea of where their answer should be they should have some
idea if their answer is correct.
 Students need to learn to estimate to be proficient math
students.
 Under lesson ideas in the GCG you could use “Estimate
Measure” word problems and emphasize to students how to
estimate before they computate so they may check for
reasonableness.
Enrich/Reteach/Intervention
 Reteach page R89 & R92 could be used to help students gain
proficiency to measuring and comparing lengths. There is not
a lot of content on the pages but you could use this to make
additional problems as a model to create more.
 Enrich activity on T.E. p 457B is an open ended problem solving
scenario, H.O.T. question on T.E. p 459
