Sophomore Year Chemistry Passing grade in Biology Chemistry Honors More math intensive study of Chemistry High B or better in Biology High B or better in Geometry or above Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 or Algebra 2/Trig Score of 22/26 or higher on Chemistry Placement Quiz May only take one or the other during high school Sophomore Year Physics Passing grade in Biology A or B in Geometry Physics Honors More math intensive study of Physics A or B in Biology A or B in Algebra II May only take one or the other during high school Based on performance at LHS in Biology, Math, Math diagnostic, ability to handle stress Chemistry Course Placement Your Biology teacher will indicate whether they recommend Chemistry or Chemistry Honors on your Course Planning Worksheet Course level we feel you will be successful in, NOT lost or over stressed Consider other commitments sophomore year (i.e. advance math etc.) Parent signature is required to override a teacher recommendation Junior Year Physics Passing grade in either Chemistry course Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 or higher Physics Honors More math intensive study of Physics Passing grade in either Chemistry course High B or better in Algebra 2 or above May only take one or the other during high school Junior Year Chemistry Passing grade in Biology Chemistry Honors More math intensive study of Chemistry High B or better in Biology High B or better in Geometry or above Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 or Algebra 2/Trig Score of 21/26 or higher on Chemistry Placement Quiz May only take one or the other during high school Senior Year Biology AP High B or better in Biology AND A in either Chemistry course Chemistry AP High B or better in either Chemistry course Physics AP High B or better in either Physics course AND Completion of Algebra 2/Trig Physiology Desire to learn about the study of the human body and how it works Provides a unique experience in organ/organism dissections C or better in previous science courses Standard vs. Honors Both are college prep, satisfying UC requirement “D” Both meet State Standards Honors is math intensive Honors courses generally cover more topics faster and to a greater depth Take one OR the other, not both Advanced Placement (AP) A second year, intensive course Meant for students interested in pursuing rigorous college-level work Independent reading and study required beyond classroom instruction AP Examination in May Recommended Sequence Biology Chemistry or Chemistry Honors Physics or Physics Honors AP Physics AP Biology AP Chemistry Physiology 9th grade 10th grade 11th grade 12th grade Independent Study: STEM Research For incoming 9th and 10th graders only, non-UC elective, Pass/Fail Outcomes: Learn how to develop your own science, technology, engineering, or math question Develop a STEM research proposal Complete the research (not bibliographical) Compete in the Synopsys Championship Recommended traits: Earned a high B or better in previous science classes Strong interest in one area of science, technology, engineering, or math Mature Apply online March 11-15.
