Some Things Old Some Things New A Fresh Look at Instructional Design (adapted from Dr. Allison Rossett’s ASTD 2012 presentation) We Want This… Learners learning eagerly Learners having fun Learners who are amused by… “Ooohh… I touch, and it responds!” Instructional Design Basics •ID = Applied Education Psychology that includes iterations with SMEs and Users •Educational Psychology •Behaviourism: It’s all about DOING IT •Cognitivism: It’s all about GETTING IT •Connectivism: Less of know-how; more of KNOW-WHERE and KNOW-WHO Instructional Design Greatness • It’s all about THEM (the learners). • Learners should be able to see that the lesson is about them, their tasks, their problems… • The learning experience should • Be vivid and authentic • Be full of worked examples • Provide opportunities to practice, think and do • Getting learners to identify errors is a great way to get them to be proactive in the learning process Instructional Design Greatness • Learning experience should assure learners of success but also stretches them • Stretch the learner but do not over-stretch otherwise they may get de-motivated For further reading: http://www.positivedeviance.org/ Instructional Design Greatness • People have problems with retention • Technology is great with post classroom training refreshers ID that Touches Minds & Hearts • Let learners experience success • Use 2-sided arguments (or more) to make points (more convincing than “telling” them the “right” answer) • Innoculate learners from learning barriers that are ahead • Use stories, problems, anecdotes that show emotions and reactions • Encourage reflections about the usefulness and meaning of what is being learned • Use extrinsic rewards for boring & repetitive tasks Towards Learning & Performance Tomorrow Today Always • ALWAYS (evergreens): • Practice, feedback, examples • TODAY (what is already a trend): • Scenarios, commentary, checklists, coaching, problems to solve, aided and unaided performance • TOMORROW (what will be the trend henceforth): • Organisational knowledge, community, social networks, performance support, choices!!!
