KENT SCHOOL DISTRICT DR. RICHARD STEDRY CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER 2011/12 BUDGET REDUCTION PRESENTATION Why Do We Have to Make Reductions? 1 Federal stimulus funds the district has used in recent years to shore up the budget are ending with the 2010-2011 school year. The state, our primary funding source, has significantly less revenue due to the lagging economy. Additionally, some budget items are required by law and the district has to pay for those programs even if it means significantly reducing or eliminating other programs that are equally valuable but not legally required. Finally, the district has used all of the accounting techniques it can to soften budget cuts. The low-hanging fruit has been removed. To continue the metaphor, our next step is cutting some branches. Thankfully, we are not at the stage of cutting programs and personnel to the bare minimum to keep the district operating. 2011/12 General Fund Reductions 2 How Did We Reach $6 Million? 3
