BASIC FACTS ABOUT WATER
Because 70% of the Earth is covered by
water, it is called “the Blue Planet”
Yet only 2,5 % of the world’s water is
fresh water, while 97 % is oceans.
About two thirds of the human body is
water. Some parts of the body contains
more water than others. For example 70%
of your skin is water.
You can survive about a month without
food, but only 5 to 7 days without water.
Most of our food is made up of water:
# tomatoes: 95 %
# spinach: 91 %
# milk: 90 %
# apples: 85 %
# potatoes: 80 %
# beef: 61 %
# hot dog: 56 %
Turkey’s water resources
Rivers of Turkey
Turkey is between three major bodies of
water on each side:
The BLACK SEA IN THE NORTH
The MEDITERRANEAN SEA IN THE SOUTH
The AEGEAN SEA IN THE WEST
Turkey is not a country rich in fresh water.
Lets compare Turkey in the region:

Palestine is 100 cubic meters per year
Jordan is 250 cubic meters per year
Israel is 500 cubic meters per year
Syria is 1420 cubic meters per year
Turkey is 1830 cubic meters per year
Iraq is 2110 cubic meters per year
Canada is 10.000 cubic meters per year
SO TURKEY is not the richest country in the region.
Water rich countries have 10,000 cubic meters of water
per capita yearly.
Turkey’s per capita water capacity is 1,830 cubic meters
Some of the rivers in Turkey are:
The Eupherates river with its dam
The scamender
The Sakarya River
The Kizilirmak ( The Red River)
The Firat

Hasankeyf ruins on River Tigris

• We have a dam in Alacati: Kutlu Aktas Dam

The dam has been constructed in 1994
Its capacity is 19 million tonnes.
But it is not full, it has about 6 million tones now
It has a purifying unit
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM in Alacati?
Need of water in Alacati has risen with the growth in
population.
Water shortage in our dams caused by global
warming
Lack of fresh water
extreme usage of water
decrease of rains and snows illegal using.
