As the capital of forests and mushrooms, the
city of Varena attracts locals and tourists to the
annual Mushroom Festival, which takes place
each year on the last Saturday of September.
It should be noted that the forests of Varėna
region produce the highest amounts of
mushrooms.


The most important event of the festival mushroom picking championship in
Marcinkonys.
The team, which picks the biggest amount of
edible mushrooms and boletus (which are the
most important mushrooms in Lithuania, like
the king of mushrooms), will become winners
of the Mayor‘s Cup.


Following the contest, celebrations take place in
Varena City Park.
Various events take place and the mushroom theme
dominates everywhere : Folk and Trade Fair, Book
Fair, sports events, also there live folk music sounds.



Folk artists proudly display their hand-crafted
souvenirs, intricate weavings, and unique pottery
designs.
Costumed men and women sat behind small tables
superfluous with baked goods, vegetables,
mushroom, and potato dishes.
