FUME CUPBOARD GENERAL OVERVIEW
GENERAL OVERVIEW
Fume hoods are one of the most important components used to protect laboratory
personnel from exposure to hazardous chemicals and agents used in the laboratory.
When used properly, they can provide an effective backup safety device for the
containment and exhaust of toxic, offensive or flammable materials when the
containment of an experiment or procedure fails and vapors or dusts escape from the
apparatus used.
Average face velocity is the main criterion that is used to determine if a hood is
functioning satisfactorily as a safety device for the containment and elimination of
airborne contaminants. Factors that can affect face velocity and thus hood performance
include baffle position, cross drafts, air volume, hood features, hood location, foot traffic
and user work practices.
STANDARD CONFORMANCE AND COMPLIANCE
The design and performance of fume hoods are generally conform to the following
international standards: SEFA 1-2002
 ASHRAE 110-95
 AS2243-8
 EN 14175
 BS 7258
FUME HOOD CONSTRUCTION
Fume Hood Superstructure
In general, the fume hood shall come with worktop, sash, base storage cabinet, control
and display panel, electrical distribution board, lighting encased with a vapor proof
casing and utility facilities.
Where the construction material used is concern, it must be selected with a predominant
view to safety in a hazardous environment. The fume hood shall have dual wall
construction with an air gap within for safety. Materials used must be resistant to
chemicals, heat abrasion, impact vandalism and fungi. The fume hood design needs to
have access for easy decontamination, cleaning and maintenance. All electrical fittings
shall be properly insulated and exposed surface shall be electrically earthed to the earth
terminal of the isolator.
Typically construction acceptable for fume hood shall have an external wall of powder
coated epoxy steel material or fire resistant glass-fiber reinforce plastic and an internal
chamber molded, one piece, fire resistant fiberglass material. It shall be furnished with
clear lamination, safety glass of 6mm thickness, tampered proof sash assembly with
counter balanced weight.
The fume hood shall be constructed with a well designed baffle and internal lining with
coved corners. Materials used in the construction of the fume cupboard working space
shall be able to minimize resistant to air flow and to avoid turbulence, backflow and air
eddied. Fluctuation in the sash velocity as the sash is raised or lowered should be
minimal.
FUME CUPBOARD GENERAL OVERVIEW
Work Top
The epoxy table top shall be dished at certain angle to prevent spill over. The worktop
shall be 900mm form final floor level and have resistant to solvents, acids, heat and
impact. A suitable sink shall be recessed in the left corner beneath the gooseneck
faucets.
General Purpose Base Cabinet
The storage cabinet shall be of metallic type and come with removable shelf and rear
panels to provide access to service plumbing. The shelf and bottom shall be lined ribbed
rubber matting. The toe space shall be protected by coved rubber molding. Doors shall
be close fitting type and no parts of the cabinet shall support combustion. Air vent piping
shall be provided to extract any escaped fume from within the base cabinet storage
area. Air vent pipe shall be permanently connected to the main exhaust PVC pipe from
the fume hood.
Polypropylene material sheet or drip tray shall be provided in base cabinet shelf to
protect shelving from coming into contact with any split chemical solution.
Fume Hood Utility
All service valves or devices shall be fitted to the sides of the fume hood fascia. All
handles shall be fitted with international coding system.
FUME CUPBOARD Performance/ Specification/ Certification
FUME HOOD PERFORMANCE
The fume hood shall be of a demonstrable aerodynamic design capable of containing
effluent generated within the hood at a face velocity of at least0.5 m/sec. The interior
lighting shall have a minimum of 700 lux at worktop level.
GENERAL SPECIFICATION
Material
Hood Exterior is epoxy coated steel
Front Panel
Easily removed without tools for easy accessibility
to electrical wiring facilities.
Quickly and easily removed to provide convenient
to service fixture from the front of the hood.
Convenient access to sash weight, service fixture
and plumbing lines.
Fiberglass/stainless steel
6mm double layered glass with safety lamination
The exhaust outlet reduces static pressure loss to
ensure smooth, efficient airflow.
The integral condensation collection rings
prevents condensed vapors in the ductwork from
entering the work area and channels them to drain
or collection container via the rubber tubing
supplied.
Shielded with glass plate properly sealed.
Uses energy saving fluorescent light.
Two rocker switches located with easy reach of
the operator control both the internal lights and
blower.
Remote valve with side outlet
Water fixtures are plumbed with copper tubing
while gas is plumbed with tin-lined tubing
220V, 13Amp single-phase electrical outlets are
mounted on the front-end panel
Epoxy table top specially designed to provide
chemical resistant inside the fume hood
One-piece corrosion resistant from a special
formulated of epoxy resins to withstand chemicals.

Perchloric Acid Fume Hood is used when work with perchloric acid. The inner line should be
seamless to prevent potential trap of the fume / particles that will crystallized. Fume from the
hood will go through a scrubber unit that will wash down the fume before it goes to the ducting
system. These type of fume hood need dedicated ducting and exhaust system. VSD or VAV
system can be used together with the fume hood to increase protection of the operator.

Radioisotope fume hood should be designed too efficiently ventilate procedures using radiochemicals. The fume hood must be able to provide a flow of air sufficient to extract the fumes
from within the work area and keep away from the operator to avoid ingestion, inhalation or skin
contact. Hood interior is constructed of seamless, ground and polished 304 or 316L stainless
steel with covered interior corner.
Free of joints, cracks or gaskets to protect against spills and radioactive build-up. The hood
comes with integral cup-sink which can be used to dispose of liquids safely and may act as a
drain during cleaning procedure.
FUME CUPBOARD – Explosion Proof Hood
All electrical component, semi-conductor or component that can produce spark should be isolated
or at the external of the fume hood. Lights should be housed in an explosion proof casing. Sash
material should be an explosion proof material.
