A bit of theory to start off…
 Epistemology is the branch of philosophy
concerning the theory of knowledge; what is
knowledge and how we gather and process
knowledge (Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
 Intelligence – information gathering
 Information differs from most broad theoretical concepts of
knowledge in that information is valued for it’s relevance
rather than for it’s detail or accuracy
 The opposite of the “knowledge for knowledge’s sake” point
of view
 Data – precise or particular information
 Fact – verified information

A bit of theory to start off…
 Power is the ability to influence others
 One of the main sources of power, both for an
organization or for the individual, is Information
which was linked to other power sources such
as Position and Prestige
 But with advent of the “Information Age” there
has now been a dramatic shift in the previously
established power structures between the
“professionals” and the “public”

A bit of theory to start off…
 Information is the result of processing,
gathering, manipulating and organizing data in a
way that adds to the knowledge of the receiver
(Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
 Key is the context in which data is taken and viewed
 If you don’t know the question, just the answer won’t make
much sense e.g. “42”

A bit of theory to start off…
 A Record is a specialized form of information
 It is information that is produced consciously as a byproduct of a business activity or transaction and
retained because if the information’s value
 The integrity of the retained record has value to the
business
 The record must be obtainable when required

What is Informatics?
 Information Science: the sciences concerned
with gathering, manipulating, storing, retrieving,
and classifying recorded information (Princeton University)
 Information Science or Informatics is the science
of information. It is often, though not exclusively,
studied as a branch of computer science and
information technology and is related to
database, ontology and software engineering

What is Informatics?
 The collection, classification, storage, retrieval,
and dissemination of recorded knowledge
(Vanderbilit)
 A field of study that focuses on the use of
technology for improving access to and
utilization of information (Drecker)
 The common definition today is that Informatics
is the study interrelationship between people,
computers and information.

What is Health Informatics?
 Health informatics is the systematic study of
information in the healthcare delivery system—
how it is captured, retrieved, and used in making
decisions—as well as the tools and methods
used to manage this information and support
decisions. American Health Information Management Association
 Health informatics - information agenda for
health services which recognises the role of
citizens as agents in their own care, as well as
the major information-handling roles of the nonmedical healthcare professions. British Medical Informatics Society

What is Nursing Informatics?
 Nursing Informatics integrates nursing
science, computer science, and information
science to manage and communicate data,
information, and knowledge in nursing practice.
 Nursing informatics facilitates the integration of
data, information, and knowledge to support
clients, nurses, and other providers in their
decision-making in all roles and settings. This
support is accomplished through the use of
information structures, information processes,
and information technology.
Canadian Nurses Association (2003)

What is Nursing Informatics?
 The goal of nursing informatics is to improve the
health of populations, communities, families, and
individuals by optimizing information
management and communication. This includes
the use of information and technology in the
direct provision of care, in establishing effective
administrative systems, in managing and
delivering educational experiences, in
supporting lifelong learning, and in supporting
nursing research. Canadian Nurses Association (2003)

Manitoba that you can think of?

What is e-health?
 “eHealth is the single-most important revolution
in healthcare since the advent of modern
medicine, vaccines, or even public health
measures like sanitation and clean water". Silber D. The
case for eHealth. (Presented at the European Commission’s first high-level conference on eHealth May 22/23
2003.) European Institute of Public Administration 2003
 This later-generation term reflect the substantive
contribution of the citizen & non-medical
professions to the generation and usage of
healthcare data and related information. (wikipedia)

What is e-health?
"e-health is an emerging field of medical
informatics, referring to the organisation and
delivery of health services and information using
the Internet and related technologies. In a
broader sense, the term characterizes not only a
technical development, but also a new way of
working, an attitude, and a commitment for
networked, global thinking, to improve health
care locally, regionally, and worldwide by using
information and communication technology"
[Eysenbach, 2001, adapted by Pagliari et al, 2005].

What is e-health?
"eHealth = Medicine + Communication
+ Information + Society"
Gunther Eysenbach.

Summary of Key Points
 The Information Age has taken a firm hold in
health care whether we like it or not
 There has been a great deal of resistance within
the health care system to this change due to the
culture of health care
 The concept of the electronic health record
(EHR) is just one aspect of health care
informatics that many Manitoba nurses in the
three main branches of nursing are fast
becoming familiar with in their day to day practice
Nursing Informatics 101

Summary of Key Points
 Nurses will need to understand how their clients
and family search out and acquire information
and adapt their teaching/learning strategies
accordingly
 Nurses have learning opportunities that could
not have been imagined 20 years ago and now
can acquire the “power” that the profession is
perceived as lacking within health care

Summary of Key Points
 Nursing, often seen as the “human” element in
health care has the opportunity for exponential
professional growth, both individually and as a
whole professional due to the e-health
“revolution”
