OBJECTIVE
Student will inspect, test
and flush cooling system
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Eye protection
2. Coolant
3. Hand Tools & Coolant Tester
4. Funnel
5. Hoist or Jack & Safety Stands
5. Vehicle (See Instructor)
PROCEDURE
• WEAR EYE PROTECTION! With engine cool !
Remove radiator cap. Test coolant. Note condition on skill
sheet. Inspect radiator cap. Note appearance. Loosen drain
plug & drain cooling system. Tighten drain plug. Fill cooling
system with water. Run engine till thermostat opens. Drain
cooling system. Note appearance of fluid drained. Refill and
repeat until clean water comes out of engine. Tighten drain
plug. With 100% coolant, add 1/2 volume of cooling system
capacity. Fill the balance of system with water. Run engine
until warm and top off with 50/50 mix of coolant & water. Do
not forget to clean and refill overflow reservoir with 50/50
coolant mix. Check system for leaks.

• With engine cool !
• Remove radiator cap
• Inspect radiator cap
• Note appearance
Step 3
• Test coolant
• Note condition on skill sheet
Step 4
• Loosen drain plug & drain cooling system into clean
pan or bucket
Step 5
• Tighten drain plug.
• Fill cooling system with
water
• Run engine till
thermostat opens
• Drain cooling system.
(Note appearance of
fluid drained)
• Refill with water and
repeat until clean water
comes out of engine
Step 6
• Look up cooling system
capacity in one of the
following:
• Repair manual
• Mitchell-On-Demand
• All-Data
• Fast Spec
• Vehicle Owner’s Manual
Step 7
• With 100% coolant, add 1/2
volume of cooling system
capacity.
– Example if capacity is 10quarts
– add 5 quarts coolant
• Fill the balance of system
with water.
• Run engine until warm and
top off with 50/50 mix of
coolant & water
Step 8
• Do not forget to clean
and refill overflow
reservoir with 50/50
coolant mix
• Check system for leaks
Step 9
• Fill out all information on task sheet
• Clean and put away all tools
• Dispose of waste coolant in appropriately
labeled waste coolant container
• Throw away empty coolant bottle
• Clean work area completely
• Have instructor evaluate and sign task sheet
