Social Networking
National Tarbiyyati Day - Lajna Imaillah Ireland 2013
Social Networking
There are many
internet dangers
but let ’s focus on just one of the most popular category of web sites
(Social Networking)
e.g. Facebook, myspace, bebo, twitter
Social Networking is web-based service, which allows interacting and Building
social relations
among people
around the world.
Social Networking Commercial + NON-Commercial Social Networking
Video/ Audio Sharing Commercial & Non Commercial Social Networking Platform
For Professionals / Artists / Photographers
Let ’s talk about
How does it work ?
Bulletin boards i.e. a Space you share: • Real name / Screen Name • Personal Profile Date of Birth, hometown, schools, likes, and dislikes. • Post pictures, favorite songs, Videos, and things you like .
• Invite and Accept friendship requests to your site to post comments.
This information could then be available to everyone in the world to see!!
The most serious problem is about Privacy
. People share their
personal life
on Social-Networking Web sites.
It ’s easy to access not only to our personal life, but also to our information… like the: Name, Age, and Address can be used to
commit online crimes
easily.
According to Joan Goodchild , senior Editor of Chief Security Officer Online:
“Your privacy may be at far greater risk of being violated than you know when you log onto Facebook.
….most dangers of Facebook • Your information is being
shared with third parties.
• Privacy settings revert to
default after each redesign .
• Facebook ads may contain malware •
Your real friends
unknowingly make you vulnerable.
• Scammers are creating
fake profiles
Facebook ’s mission
is to get you to share as much information as it can so it can
share it with advertisers.
As it looks now,
the more info you share the more
they are going to with
Advertisers
and
make money
.
Facebook Redesigns
Every time Facebook redesigns the site, which happens at least a few times a year, it puts your privacy settings back to a default in which, All of your (personal) information is made public.
Facebook does not notify you the changes, and your privacy settings are set back to public default.
Is
Facebook or other social Networking sites
secure platform to
communicate
with your friends ?
No such Thing is Private
•The internet is like an elephant
– it never forgets
.
While spoken words leave Little trace and are quickly forgotten,
written words endure
in the online environment.
•Whatever you post,
tweet (on Twitter),
update (your profile), share, even if it ’s deleted immediately afterwards -- has the potential to be captured by someone, somewhere, without your knowledge.
•There is no such thing as in other sites.
“private”
in the world of social media because anything you put up c
an be grabbed copied
, saved on someone else ’s Computer and mirrored
It ’s based on people following others and getting to read their “tweets”. This is one of the dangers of social networking sites because
many people want as many followers as possible
and they are not shy about what they say in their tweets.
A Little Bird told me-
Another truth about Twitter
Every time you use Twitter, the government
keeps a copy of your tweets
. Sounds crazy, but it ’s true.
Spammers
•
Social networking sites can make life easier for spammers and stalkers
•
Social networking sites are ideal havens for online criminal activities as they provide a combination of two key factors: a huge number of users and a high level of trust among these users. (Zdnet.com)
Very of us would provide our personal information, e.g
Date of Birth, Address, phone numbers, employee Name, school names etc
to someone we met in real life, but we ’re quite happy to give it to a
total stranger online.
Protect your personal data as if it were a matter of life and death.
What happens on the internet
stays on internet
and it ’s up to you to make sure what appears in connection
with your name
and not have the potential
image
does
to harm you now or in the future.
According to FBI:
“Once information is posted to a social networking site, it is no longer private. The more information you post, the more
vulnerable
you may become.
“Just visiting a website can expose your computer to malware even if you
do not download a file or program. Websites with information on popular celebrities are
hijacked by criminals
, or criminals may create such websites to lure victims to them ”.
a new study suggests
using
may not be a great idea for those with
low self-esteem
.
Extremely dangerous for teenagers!!
With their brain still developing, it is very easy to take advantage of them by pretending to be someone else…(interested in him/her) and then the criminal reveals that it was a
hoax .
Many teens have fallen into deep depression or even lost their life , an enormous tragedy and one the biggest dangers of social Networking.
Cyber bullying is a serious problem.
Cyber bullying is a act to
harm other people
through Internet, cell phone or other social networking sites . Some people spread
lies, write bad comments
and often
post damaging information
on websites.
The statistics on cyber bullying and suicide are alarming:
Suicide is the
third leading cause of death among young people,
resulting in about
4,400 deaths per year,
according to the CDC.
For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts
is a silent
killer
“It's all about
social class
and
popularity,
… people use it to
complain, gossip, fight and pretty much anything that sends a negative message.
”
Other
Disadvantages…?
WASTE OF TIME
“We cannot waste time. We can only waste ourselves ”
.
(George M. Adams)
Islam Teachings ?
“Whenever two strangers of the opposite gender are alone with each other, Satan becomes the third one between them.
” (Al-Tirmidhi) ”
Ego
is the part of us that
loves power.
It is the part that loves to be seen, recognized, praised and adored.
Facebook provides a powerful platform for this
. by which every
word, picture, or thought
I have can be
seen, praised or “LIKED”
.
As a result, we begin to seek this.
Whenever we put a picture, we
wait for compliments
; With the number of
“Likes”
or comments, physical beauty becomes something that can now be quantified.
When we put a post, we wait for it to be “liked”. And we are ever conscience of – and even compete in-the number of “friends” we have.
More importantly, it creates
a false sense of self-importance
. Soon I become the focus, the one on display.
The message is:
I am so important. My life is so important.
Every move
I make
is so important. The result becomes an even stronger
me-focused
world, where I am at
the center.
The goal of this life is to realize the
Truth of Allah ’s greatness
. The goal is to take myself
out of center
and
put HIM (God) there instead.
Allah says in Quran: “Mutual rivalry in
seeking worldly
increase diverts you
from God ”.
(Sura al Takasar - Verse: 2)
Jazakumallah
May Allah reward you with good !
