Degree of Protection
The IEC 60529 standard (02/ 2001) gives , by the IP code, the different
degrees of protection provided by an electrical enclosure.

The IP degrees of protection :
(IEC 60529/EN 60529)
 1st digit:
• protection of persons
• protection against solids.
 2nd digit :
• protection against liquids.
 Additional letter (optional) : protection of persons against
contact with live parts

•
Definitions
A : protect againts access of the back of the hand
B : protect against access of fingers Ø 12 mm
C : protect against access of a tool diameter 2.5 mm
D : protect against access of a tool diameter 0.1 mm

Degree of protection
 The IP code is described by 2 specific digits; an additional
letter , in option, can complete the IP code when the real
protection of persons against contact with live parts is better
than the protection given by the first digit:
• the 1st digit gives the level of protection of equipment
against penetration of solid objects and protection of
persons
• the 2nd digit gives the level of protection of equipment
against penetration of liquids.
 Additional letter :
• it is used only when the effective protection of persons is
better than the one given bythe first IP digit
• in case of only protection of persons is needed, the 2 IP
digits are replaced by x.
Example : IPxxB.

External influences (IEC 60364-5-51)
External influences shall be taken into account
when choosing:
--The appropriate measures to ensure the safety of persons (in
particular in special locations or electrical installations)
--The characteristics of electrical equipment, such as degree of
protection (IP), mechanical withstand (IK), etc.
Classification
Each condition of external influence is designated by a code
comprising a group of two capital letters and a number as follows:
First letter (A, B or C)
The first letter relates to the general category of external influence :
c A = environment
c B = utilisation
c C = construction of buildings

Second letter
The second letter relates to the nature of the external influence.
Number
The number relates to the class within each external influence.
Example
For example the code AC2 signifies:
A = environment
AC = environment-altitude
AC2 = environment-altitude > 2,000 m
