Types of Physical or
Mechanical Weathering
1.Frost wedging
2.Root wedging
3.Abrasion
4.Exfoliation
5.Differential weathering
Frost wedging
Icea wedging, also called freeze-thaw, happens when water, such as rain,
goes into cracks of rocks. And when the water freezes, its force increases so
that it expands the cracks which eventually lead rocks to break down into
pieces.

This is an example
of
root wedging
Roots produce carbonic acid
that dissolves minerals in
rocks. ( chemical )
Roots grow through
cracks in rocks. (
physical)
This is an
example of of
tumbling and
abrasion
Abrasion happens when rocks rub
together resulting to smoother rocks.
Tumbling happens when rocks roll on the
surface hitting other rocks resulting to
rounded rocks.

This is an
example of
differential
weathering.
Minerals in the
middle of the
rock is more
prone to
weathering.
Differential weathering
Exfoliation
xfoliation is one type of
mechanical weathering. It is
created when underneath
rocks that are pressed by
other rocks are exposed to
less pressure. When they
become free from pressure,
they expand and they are
peeled off. This often
creates domes and hills.

9. How is chemical weathering
different from physical
weathering?
• Physical weathering involves
breaking of rocks without altering
their chemical properties.
• Chemical weathering involves
breaking of rocks and changing
chemical properties.
10 . How is weathering different
from erosion?
Weathering is the
breaking of rocks while
erosion is the transport
of rocks.
