Maintenance of Certification:
How ACP Can Help
Every 10 Years
ABIM requires physicians who were certified in 1990 or
later to complete the ABIM Maintenance of Certification
(MOC) process every 10 years. The steps to take:
• Enroll with ABIM.
• Take the ABIM secure exam. Eligibility begins during
the sixth year of your current certification.
• Earn 100 points in Self-Evaluation of Medical
Knowledge and Practice Performance at any time
during the 10-year period. (Even after the secure
exam)
Self-Evaluation Requirements:
• Minimum of 20 points in self-evaluation of medical
knowledge required.
• Minimum of 20 points in self-evaluation of practice
performance required.
• Remaining 60 points can be from any combination of
medical knowledge and practice performance.
• The same 100 points can apply to each certificate you
renew; for example, internal medicine and a subspecialty
