T
he way
of the Cross
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
The most innocent Jesus accepts
for the glory of God and the salvation of all,
the unjust sentence of death pronounced
against him by Pilate.
Most loving Jesus, for your love
and in penance for my sins,
I accept my death with all the pain,
sorrow and affliction that will accompany it.
May your will and not mine be done, Lord.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Through her heart, his sorrow sharing,
all his bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword had passed.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Jesus takes the cross upon his shoulders,
Jesus Master invites us:
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny
himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
I want to follow you, Divine Master,
by mortifying my passions, by accepting
my daily cross. Draw me to yourself, Lord.
The road is narrow, but it leads to heaven.
On the way I will lean on you, my guide
and my comfort.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Oh, how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother highly blest
of the sole-begotten one!
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Wearied by the agony of Gethsemane,
tortured by the scourging and the crowning
with thorns, exhausted by fasting, Jesus falls
for the first time beneath the enormous weight
of the cross.
Jesus fell to sustain those who fall.
Many are the temptations of the devil, the flesh,
and the world. Lead us not into temptation,
Lord, but deliver us from all evil, past, present,
and future.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath behold the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Carrying the cross, Jesus meets his Mother,
whose soul is pierced by a sword of sorrow.
The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are united
in the same suffering.
Behold the two hearts of Jesus and Mary,
grant me the grace to better know you,
love you, and imitate you.
I offer you my whole heart that it may always
be yours.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ’s dear Mother to behold?
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
With false compassion,
“ they compelled a passerby,
Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross of Jesus ”.
I too am bound to cooperate in the redemption,
completing with my sufferings the passion
of Jesus Christ. Accept me, good Master,
as a small victim. Preserve us all from sin,
save sinners from hell, and free the souls in
purgatory from their sufferings.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother’s pain untold.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
With devout compassion Veronica wipes
the face of Jesus, and Jesus rewards her
by leaving the impression of his face on the towel.
I see this pious disciple the model of those
who make atonement. I understand the duty
I have to make reparation for my sins and for
the offenses of others to your divine Majesty.
Jesus, impress on me and on all who atone,
the virtues of your most holy Heart.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled
she beheld her tender Child
all with bloody scourges rent.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
A second time, Jesus’ strength fails him,
and he who was made the “opprobrium of
humanity” and the “rejected one of the people”
falls a second time beneath the cross.
Good Master, thus do you pay
for our repeated sins, committed maliciously
or because we put ourselves in the occasions.
Lord, I detest my sins, which are an offense
to your Majesty, the cause of the death
of your divine Son and my spiritual ruin,
and I resolve to avoid all sin in the future.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
For the sins of his own nation
she saw him hang in desolation
till his spirit forth he sent.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
A large crowd, and many women who were
weeping for him, followed Jesus. He said to
them: “Daughters of Jerusalem do not weep
for me. but weep for me, but weep for
yourselves and for your children.”
I humble myself because of my many personal
faults and for those which others have committed
because of my bad example and negligence
in my duties. My Jesus, grant me the grace to
keep others from sinning, insofar as I am able,
by my actions, example, word and prayer.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
O my Mother, fount of love,
touch my spirit from above;
make my heart with yours accord.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Jesus falls the third time beneath the cross
because our obstinacy has led us to sin again..
Obstinacy blinds the mind, hardens the heart,
and places a person in danger of an impenitent
death. Grant me, Lord, the grace to keep
watch on myself, to be faithful to the
examination of conscience and to confess
myself often, with the right dispositions.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Make me feel as you have felt,
Make my soul to glow and melt
With the love of Christ my Lord.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Having reached Calvary, Jesus is stripped of
his garments and given a bitter mixture of gall
and myrrh to drink.
See how much our sins of vanity and gluttony
have cost Jesus! Lord, grant me the grace
of detaching my heart more and more from
all vanity and sinful satisfaction, to seek
you only, my supreme and eternal happiness.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Holy Mother, pierce me through;
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
The executioners nail Jesus to the cross
beneath the gaze of his most afflicted Mother,
causing him unspeakable agony.
Those who crucify their flesh, with a real
mortification of the senses, belong to Jesus
Christ. I want to belong to Jesus Christ in
life, in death, and in eternity. Jesus, do not
let me separate myself from you.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Let me share with you his pain,
who fro all my sins was slain,
who for me in torment died.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Jesus suffers indescribable pains for three hours,
then dies on the cross for our sins.
The death of Jesus is renewed every day on
our altars in Holy Mass.
Most loving, Jesus, grant me devotion to
Holy Mass, so that I may participate in it
often and with the dispositions which your
holy Mother had at the foot of the cross.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
Let me mingle tears with you,
mourning him who mourned for me
all the days that I may live.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
The sorrowful Mary receives her Son into her
arms, after he was taken down from the cross.
Mary contemplates in his wounds the
horrible work of our sins and Jesus’ infinite
love for us. Devotion to Mary is a sign of
salvation. Mother, accept me as your child.
Accompany me throughout my life. Assist
me daily and especially in the hour of my
death.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
By the cross with you to stay,
there with you to weep and pray,
is all I ask of you to give.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
The body of Jesus, anointed with spices, is brought
to the sepulcher. Jesus predicted his passion:
“Behold we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son
of man will be delivered to the chief priests and
scribes, and they will condemn him to death”
(Mt. 20:18-19)
Lord Jesus, you have reached the climax of
your humiliation, the sepulcher. How
precious we all are, if you, Lord have given
your life for us, offering yourself as a victim.
I want to follow you wherever you call me to
cooperate in your work of redemption.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
Have mercy on us.
Holy Mother, pierce me through
in my heart, each wound renew
of my Savior Crucified.
While my body here decays,
may my soul your goodness praise,
safe in paradise with you. Amen.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Mary awaits with lively faith the resurrection of her
Son, as he had predicted: “On the third day I will
rise again” (cf. Mt. 20:19)
I firmly believe, my God, in the resurrection
of Jesus Christ, as I believe in the
resurrection of the body. Every day I want
to arise to a new life so as to merit
to arise in the glory of the last day.
Save us, O Christ our Savior,
through the power of your cross.
You who saved Peter on the sea,
have merci on us.
Let us pray:
Father, you have willed to save men and women through the death of Christ
your Son on the cross. Grant that we who have known his mystery of love on earth
may enjoy the fruits of the redemption in heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
