Notebook Lesson on Volcanoes Eric Angat Teacher Essential Question How are we affected by Volcanic eruptions? The three types of volcanoes. •Gentle or non-explosive eruptions of flowing lava. •widest •Most violent ( explosive) eruption. •Smallest type •Explosive or nonexplosive eruption •Biggest http://www.geology.utah.gov/teacher/tc/tc0599.htm 1. What is a crater lake? lake Crater lake – caldera filled with water. Caldera is a collapsed crater due to volcanic eruption. 2. Why do volcanoes erupt and explode? Magma is lighter than rock so it rises and comes out as lava. The pressure that it carries with it causes volcanoes to erupt and even explode when lake water comes in contact with the very hot lava. 3. Describe a Lava Flow. Lava flow is molten rock flowing from the slope of the volcano. 4. What is a volcano? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reNz6CIKE00 Volcano: A mountain that connects to molten rock below the surface of Earth. When pressure builds up, this molten rock erupts to the surface in the form of lava, lahar, pyroclastic flow and clouds. Volcanoes can erupt slowly or can be quite explosive! 5. How do volcanic islands form? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMtuTfAqAbo Volcanoes can also form in the middle of a plate, where magma rises upward until it erupts on the sea floor, at what is called a “hot spot.” The Hawaiian Islands were formed by such a hot spot occurring in the middle of the Pacific Plate. 6. What is lahar? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RStpgsLkhhY Lahar in Japan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kznwnpNTB6k Lahar is volcanic rocks, ash and water that flows rapidly along a slope. Effects of lahar? Lahars are extremely deadly destructive they can destroy any structures in their path. Lahars can destroy forests. Lahars can bury communities with debris. Lahars can block tributary streams. Tributaries are water channels that supply water to the river. d. Lahars can lead to increased deposition of sediment. Deposition of sediment makes rivers shallow. 7. What is lava? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egEGaBXG3Kg Lava is hot molten or semifluid rock erupted from a volcano or fissure. Igneous rocks form from cooled lava. 8. What is pyroclastic flow? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz7WCttwXQk Pyroclastic cloud. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvG_N7eqMWk Pyroclastic refers to the masses of rock fragments and gases from a volcano. Pyroclastic flows are high-density mixtures of hot, dry rock fragments and hot gases that move away from the vent that erupted them at high speeds. Volcanic islands being created https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ6fmPNV DDA Kavachi volcano, found in the Solomon Islands 9. Why do volcanologist study the gases from volcanoes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5PFLHF3m64 Volcanic gases https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0jZhmvF-xg 10. Use the Venn diagram to show the relationships between lava flow, pyroclastic flow, and lahar. 1. Lava flow - the flow of molten rock from a volcano 2. Pyroclastic flow - a fast moving cloud of hot ash, gases, and rock from a volcano 3. Lahar - a fast moving flow of muddy water form a volcano Pyroclastic flow Lava Molten rocks All three are from volcanic eruptions.
