BENGAL GAZETTE OR CALCUTTA GENERAL ADVERTISER IN 1780; The Times of India in 1838 The Statesman from Calcutta in 1875 The Hindu from Chennai in 1878

The Bengal Journal, The Oriental Magazine, The Calcutta Chronicle, The Madras Courier, The Indian Herald, The Bombay Herald and The Bombay Courier.

The period between 1857 - 1947 Birth and closure of a multitude of newspapers.

The famous freedom fighters as Editors Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Kesari) Mahatma Gandhi (Young India, Harijan and Navajeevan like: Post-Independence scene India had about 4,000 newspapers and magazines in 17 languages. 51,960 that included dailies and publications of all the periodicities, in 2001. 60,413 at the end of March 2005 62,483 on 31st March 2006,

THE FIRST NEWSPAPERS IN INDIAN LANGUAGES

T he Samachar Darpan in Bengali. The first issue of this daily was published from the Serampore Mission Press on May 23, 1818.

In the same year, Ganga Kishore Bhattacharya started publishing another newspaper in Bengali, the Bengal Gazetti In 1818. SAMBAD KAUMUDI , in Bengali in 1820.

Miratul-ul-Akhbar in Persian language; On July 1, 1822 the first Gujarati newspaper the Bombay Samachar was published from Bombay, which is still extant. The first Hindi newspaper, the Samachar Sudha Varshan began in 1854. Malayala Manorama in Malayalam language from Kerala state in 1888.

The film is the first of its kind reports on the newspaper in India and examines its role in India’s democratic and multicultural, multilingual society.

Metrics

Newspapers in India are measured on two parameters, circulation and readership .

Circulation

Circulation is certified by the Audit bureau of Circulation which is an industry body. It audits the paid-for circulation of the member newspaper companies.

Readership

Readership is estimated by two different surveys, The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) and the National Readership Survey (NRS).

 

The National Readership Study 2005 (NRS 2005) in India is the largest survey of its kind in the world, with a sample size of over 2,61,212 house-to-house interviews to track the media exposure and changing consumer trends in both urban and rural India - and of course the estimated readership of publications.

The study covers 522 publications (221 dailies and 301 magazines)

Rising of Dailies from 23% to 24% In 2005, the average urban adult spent 42 minutes a day reading dailies; Three years earlier, the average reading time was 32 minutes.

In rural India, it reading time was 35 minutes in 2005 but in 2002, the average reading time was 32 minutes.

An addition of 21 million readers to the print media between 2002 and 2005.

Of the 200 million readers, as many as 98 million are from rural India and 101 million from urban India.

314 million people who could read and understand one or another language but who did not read any publication

HIGHLIGHTS: The female English Internet newspaper readers: 13% (This has doubled from the previous study); The majority of readership is in the age group of 21-40 years, and it is more in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh; Majority of the readers are highly educated i.e. 60% Browsing online newspapers mainly for news – 95% Browsing for Book/film/theatre reviews - 24.3% Advertisements - 9.10%.

MAJOR PLAYER

According to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2008, the Times of India is the most widely read English newspaper in India with a readership of 13.3 million. This ranks the Times of India as the top English newspaper in India by readership.

According to Comscore. TOI Online is the world's most-visited newspaper website with 159 million page views in May 2009, ahead of the New York Times, The Sun, Washington Post, Daily Mail, and USA Today Websites.

and it is the 17th most widely read newspaper in the world. It was the brainchild of the freedom fighter Mr. Puranchandra Gupta. The first edition was launched in Jhansi in 1942 and in 1947 Dainik Jagran shifted its headquarters to Kanpur where it launched its second edition on 21 September, 1947.

Dainik Jagran is India's largest circulated Hindi daily, with 21.24

Million Readers according to National Readership Survey. It is the first Indian publication to cross the 20 million mark.

Sudharma, the only Sanskrit daily newspaper in India, began its online version in June 2008. By going online Sudharma is planning to attract advertisers, which is essential for the survival of the only Sanskrit daily
