Sitting Bull
Allen Sanderson
Sitting Bull was born in Grand River
1831 in the Plains area of the
United States. He was a Sioux
Indian. His tribe, the Hunkpapa,
lived on the Great Northern Plains
where they hunted buffalo.
Interesting facts…
“Slow”, Sitting Bull’s old name, went to war
when he was just a boy with no weapons
- just a coup stick.
When he was ten years old he killed his first
buffalo.
After he fought and won against a Crow
warrior, he was renamed Sitting Bull.
Accomplishments
He was an Indian chief in the Battle of Little
Big Horn.
Sitting Bull was famous after this battle and
he later joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West
Show.
Sitting Bull College in Standing Rock, North
Dakota serves many students today.

Andrew Johns
John Philip Sousa was born in Washington,
D.C. on Nov. 6, 1854. He had no brothers or
sisters. His parents were Antonio de Sousa
and Maria Elisabeth Trinkhaus. His parents
were Portuguese, Spanish, Barvarian
(German) descent.

1743. He lived in a house called Shadwell
in Virginia. He had two older sisters. His
teacher in school was Mr. Douglas and he

Felicia Mitchell
Helen lived in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She
was born on June 27, 1880. Her parents
were Kate Adams Keller, and Colonel
Arthur Keller. She had one little sister.
Helen died June 1, 1968.

 Helen was very ill as a baby.
 She was taught to speak.
 She graduated from Radcliffe College
with honors and was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.
Accomplishments
 She wrote 14 books and many essays.
 She was an ambassador for the AFB
(American Foundation for the Blind) for
44 years.
 Even though she couldn’t hear or see
she was taught how to read, write, and
speak by her teacher, Anne Sullivan.

Jim Thorpe
Gaven Aulds
Jim was born in May, 1888 in
Oklahoma. His parents were
Hiram Thorpe and Charlotte
Viuex. He had a twin brother
named Charlie.
Interesting facts…

In Jim’s growing up years he and his brother
Charlie went to school and played ball all the
time at recess. But one winter his brother,
Charlie, got sick and died. Without Charlie, Jim
didn’t care about ball games. So Jim ran away
from school, but his father made him go back.
His mother died when he was just 15 years old.
Soon Jim became a sports guy and he won
medals at the Olympic Games.
Accomplishments



He was a pro football player who played
with President Eisenhower when they
were both attending West Point.
Jim Thorpe represented the United States
in the Olympics of 1912 in Sweden.
He won the decathlon which is a series of
ten contests.

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was always thinking about
planes and how to fly them.
When Amelia Earhart was a little girl her
sister, Muriel, helped her make an airplane
out of wood. They put it on the roof with
Amelia inside it, and slid down the roof to
make it fly.

She was born on July 24th, 1898.

Slow (Sitting Bull) was born in Black
Hills. It was the day when the
leader had a baby.
He was born in 1831 and his dad
was Sitting Bull. He died on
2/15/1890. His son was One Bull, a
great farmer and gatherer.

 When “Slow” was older he was still slow .
 He ate slow, he talked slow, and walk
slow.
 Later when he fought a Crow Indian and
won, he was renamed Sitting Bull.
Accomplishments
 Sitting Bull ended the Battle of Little Big
Horn.
 When he died, he was remembered as a
great leader of the Indian nations.

Benjamin Franklin was an inventor who
proved that lightning makes electricity.
He was the oldest member of Congress.
He was famous for writing and publishing
Poor Richard’s Almanac. The noblest
question in his book was “What good may
I do in the world?” When he died his life
had answered that question well.

Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 or
1821. Her parents were Harriet Greene
and Benjamin Ross. The place she was
born was Bucktown, Maryland. She
died almost a century ago. Harriet had

Harriet Tubman never went to school a
day of her life. Also since her parents
were held captive in slavery, she was born
in slavery, too.
When she grew up, she helped many
slaves escape to the north by way of the
Underground Railroad.
Accomplishments


Harriet Tubman led people out of slavery
by way of the Underground Railroad. It
was not really underground – it was a
secret way for them to escape.
She told the slaves how to go to a “safe”
house and look at the stars at night to find
their way to safety in the north.

When Beethoven was thirty he became
deaf. Beethoven astonished everyone by
writing some of his great music when he
could no longer hear it. Beethoven’s
symphony No. 9 was first played at a
concert in 1824. (A symphony is a long
piece of music that is played by an
orchestra.)


Beethoven wrote great music. Beethoven
soon became famous for his musical
talent. He practiced a lot. From 1800 to
1808, Beethoven wrote four symphonies.

He worked in a silver smith shop. Paul felt
bad that his horse died. When he was a
boy he liked riding his horse. Paul had 7
grandchildren. The Midnight ride occurred
on April 18 and 19, 1775 to warn John
Hancock and Samuel Adams of the
movements of the British army.
Accomplishments


Paul Revere was in the silver smith
business and the Boston tea party.
He made a famous ride called the
Midnight Ride of Paul Revere to warn the
people about the British coming.

Vermeer lived to be 43 years old. They did not
keep records back then so there’s little facts
about Johannes Vermeer.
Vermeer was a great artist who painted “Officer
and Laughing Girl” and “Women in Red Hat”.
He had many great paintings that are in
museums all over the world.
Accomplishments


He was famous because he painted many
great paintings mostly of people.
For almost 200 years his paintings were
scattered all over Europe. Finally in the
late 1800’s people recognized his great
paintings and put them in museums.
