What is D-STAR?

• D-STAR is an open standard for digital voice and data on Amateur Radio.

• One of several digital modes in Amateur Radio.

• Developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL).

• Uses an AMBE vocoder chip from DVSI.

• Compared to FM, SSB, Packet, Winlink – D-STAR is just another mode.

What can D-STAR do?

• Transmit/receive voice and 1200 bps data simultaneously.

• 128 kbps data on 23 cm via ethernet bridge.

• D-PRS (digital APRS) simultaneously with voice.

• Flexible repeater linking and callsign routing with a gateway and internet connection.

• Reflectors allow multiple repeaters to connect into a single conference bridge.

• DV Dongle, DV Access Point (DVAP), NW Digital Radio, and other 3rd parties allow voice and data access to D-STAR via a home (or remote) internet connection – similar to Echolink.

D-RATS

• Free, easy to use, D-STAR digital data package that provides email style messaging, real-time chat, file transfers, mapping and position reporting.

• Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X versions available.

• Written by Dan Smith, KK7DS.

Cascade Rising

• A Joint FEMA-OEM Exercise, June 2016 • FEMA Region 10 has recently released the Cascadia Rising Exercise Scenario Document which has just been posted at: • http://www.oregonaresraces.org/?page_id=559 • This is a large file about 7 Mb in size with many maps of expected damage from a CSZ quake based on the most recent research. Our Spring and Fall SETS this year will be based on this document. You will find it very interesting reading.

COAD - Community Organizations Active in Disaster

• Educate member organizations about what each one does day-to-day, during a small scale disaster that does not require aid outside the County and for larger events that do require state and/or federal assistance.

• Share knowledge and experience with COAD members.

Earthquake talk: Chris Goldfinger, PhD While we can’t predict exactly when the next Great Cascadia Earthquake will happen, we CAN forecast the probabilities from a long history of past earthquakes. The study of the geological history of the last 10,000 years of the Cascadia Subduction Zone has shown that there have been 43 great earthquakes (magnitude 8.0 or higher) along the coast of Oregon, Washington, California, and British Columbia. Some of these earthquakes were probably magnitude 9.0 or higher, and like the 2011 Japanese and 2004 Sumatran earthquakes, they probably also caused large tsunami waves that were devastating all over the Pacific. At this Science on Tap, Chris Goldfinger, PhD, http://ceoas.oregonstate.edu/profile/goldfinger/ , professor of geology and geophysics at Oregon State University, will talk about the geology of Cascadia and his research on the recurrence interval of major earthquakes. While this research may not allow us to pinpoint a date for the next great quake, a better understanding of the geological forces at work can help us prepare.
