From Ellenkoia to Piilolahytta (approx.
6 km) the trail is marked by blue blocks
hanging from the trees. In Finland, the
trail is marked by blue posts. The trail
has a total length of 35 km, 11 km on the
Norwegian side and 24 km on the
Finnish side. 174

The first part of the Piilola trail
follows Sortbrystjern lake down
to the Ellenkoia cabin (4.4 km) in the
Øvre Pasvik National Park. There are
many cultural monuments registered in
this area. Many of these have been
reconstructed. Information boards
explain when, how, and by whom these
cultural monuments were originally used.
In 2009, the trail was extended from the
Ellenkoia cabin to the Piilolahytta cabin.
Ten new information boards about
environment and culture were set up.
From Piilolahytta the trail goes on to
Finland, along the old farming road
between Nammijärvi lake and Kessijärvi
lake, where the trail ends.

Fra Ellenkoia til Piilolahytta (ca 6 km) er
stien merket med blåmalte klosser som
henger i trær. På finsk side er stien er
merket med blåmalte trestolper. Stien har
en total lengde på 35 km, hvorav 11 km er
på norsk side og 24 km på finsk side.
Turgåere må gjerne bruke gapahuken og
bålplassen ved Sortbrysttjern. Ellenkoia
og Piilolahytta står åpne for overnatting.
På finsk side kan man overnatte i Piilola
ødemarkskoie (3,8 km fra grensa), i
gapahuken ved Nuottamajärvi (10 km fra
grensa) og i ei åpen hytte ved Kessijärvi,
19 km fra grensa.

I 2009 ble stien forlenget fra Ellenkoia til
Piilolahytta, med ti nye informasjons­
poster om natur og kultur. Fra Piilolahytta
fortsetter stien over på finsk side, langs
den gamle gårdsveien som går mellom
Nammijärvi og Kessijärvi, hvor stien også
ender.

Første del av Piilolastien går langs
Sortbrysttjern og til Ellenkoia (4,4 km) i
Øvre Pasvik nasjonalpark. I dette området
er det registrert mange kulturminner fra
nyere tid, og flere av disse er i dag
rekonstruert. Informasjonsposter forteller
litt om når, av hvem og hvordan kultur­
minnene ble brukt.

Visitors are encouraged to use the
shelter and fireplace by Sortbrysttjern.
Ellenkoia and Piilolahytta stand open and
available for accommodation. On the
Finnish side you can stay overnight at
the Piilola wilderness cabin (3.8 km from
the border), in the shelter by
Nuottamajärvi, (10 km from the border)
and in an open cabin by Kessijärvi, 19
km from the border.
The Schengen agreement allows border
crossing by foot between Norway and
Finland as long as you are not carrying
any goods required to be checked by
customs.
