VolUmE ABSolU
Il est rIgoureux et accomplI, fondé au mIlIeu des
champs plats et Immenses, à peIne le skyline urbanIsé
des vIlles voIsInes perceptIble. le centre hospItalIer
de marne-la-vallée, conçu par br unet saunIer
archItecture, est une petIte vIlle, un organIsme total
dont la complexIté du programme n’auraIt souffert
nI le désordre, nI l’agItatIon. sans révoquer pour
autant une large palette d’émotIons et de sensatIons.

arne-la-vallée, créée en 1972 par la
réunion de vingt-sept communes à
l’est de paris, entre la marne et l’autoroute
a4, compte environ six fois moins d’habitants
que la capitale, pour un territoire supérieur
de quelque 50 kilomètres carrés. The Walt
Disney Compagny et l’état, représenté par
un epamarne et un epafrance, œuvrent en
partenariat depuis les années 1990 à son
développement économique et urbain.
avec le résultat que l’on connaît ; où le centre
commercial devient centre urbain, où l’on
convoque mansart, baltard et borromini
sur chaque chantier, où la rue devient une
succession de pavillons clonés et aveugles, où
la pierre agrafée joue la caution patrimoniale,
où la voiture est simplement indispensable.
et c’est à la limite nord de Jossigny, au milieu
des champs, au sud du territoire de mickey
qu’est implanté l’hôpital mco (médecine,
chirurgie, obstétrique), calme et silencieux.
Il est un des projets phare du plan hôpital
2012, initié par le ministre de la santé xavier
bertrand en 2007. celui-ci encadre la participation financière de l’état au chevet des
établissements de santé privés ou publics
français. dans un souci de modernisation
et de développement de l’offre de soin à
l’échelle du territoire marnovallien, il a donc
été décidé la fermeture du centre de lagny
et la construction de ce nouveau pôle ;
plus moderne, plus grand et plus complet,
dont les 72 000 mètres carrés comptent
quelque 585 lits (dont 125 en psychiatrie) et
1 700 âmes. le volume est un parallélépipède, absolu et concis, de 200 mètres par
115, pour une hauteur d’à peine 13 mètres.
composé d’un sous-sol technique, d’un
rez-de-chaussée dédié à l’accueil, aux
consultations et aux urgences, d’un premier
étage de blocs opératoires et de services
de chirurgie, cardiologie et maternité et
d’un dernier niveau réservé à la pédiatrie, la
pédopsychiatrie et la psychiatrie adulte. et le
choix des architectes de concevoir un seul et
même édifice compact plutôt que plusieurs
entités connectées a nécessité une parfaite
gestion des questions de flux, de sécurité,
d’hygiène, de fonctionnement et de lumière.
et si l’objectif est atteint tout en privilégiant
le confort et la lisibilité, c’est par la mise en
œuvre d’un concept d’aménagement
qu’ils développent depuis quelques années
maintenant. le monospace hospitalier
développé par brunet saunier consiste en
l’exploitation d’une trame structurelle fixe
où prennent place plateaux libres, patios
d’éclairage naturel et artères de circulation.
au sein d’un tel dédale, c’est une large
palette de couleurs et une maîtrise de la
transparence qui font office de signalétique ;
ce sont ainsi les vides colorés qui ponctuent
ce monde intérieur et en facilitent ses usages.
et s’il n’y a point de paysage à refléter ici
tant le terrain est plat, c’est une aubaine ; car
les architectes ont alors fait le choix d’une
matérialité artificielle et affirmée, discrète
mais efficiente, concise mais pas muette.
la peau évanescente mise en œuvre ici
est une alternance de transparences et
d’opacités constituées par des panneaux
vitrés respirant avec stores intégrés et des
shadow box, dont la sérigraphie de lignes
blanches verticales se répète indéfiniment.
totalement évolutive puisque démontable
et recomposable à souhait, elle masque
avec élégance la répétitivité des ouvertures
et les éléments techniques, tout en procurant protection de l’intimité et régulation
des apports solaires. parfaitement lisse et
immuable, elle apporte la quiétude et la
volupté qui manquent souvent à cet univers
hospitalier, froid et bouleversant.

toWn, a complete organIzatIon, the programmatIc
complexIty of WhIch has suffered neIther fr om
dIsorder, nor unrest, and, for all that, It contInues to
maIntaIn a broad range of feelIngs and sensatIons.

arne-la-vallée, created in 1972 by
the union of twenty seven towns east
of paris, between the river marne and the
a4 motorway, has approximately six times
fewer inhabitants than the capital, for an
area that is greater by some 50 square
kilometres. the Walt disney company and
the state, represented by epamarne and
epafrance, have been collaborating since
the 1990s towards its economic and urban
development. this has had the result that
we all know, in which the shopping centre
has become the urban centre, in which
mansart, baltard and borromini are summoned to each construction site, where the
street has become a succession of cloned
and blind suburban houses, where the
stone cladding stands as a sign of heritage,
and where a car is simply vital. It is here at
the north edge of Jossigny, in the middle of
the fields, south of mickey mouse's territory
that the quiet and peaceful mco hospital
(medicine, surgery, obstetrics) is located.
It is one of the flagship projects of the plan
hôpital 2012 (hospital plan), initiated by the
health minister, xavier bertrand, in 2007. this
created a framework for the stat's financial
participation in private and public health
establishments in france. With a view to the
modernisation and development of its health
offer on the scale of the marne-la-vallée area,
it was decided to close the lagny centre
and to build this new centre; more modern,
larger and with a greater offer, whose 72,000
square metres house some 585 beds ( 125 of
which in psychiatry) and 1,700 people. the
volume is an absolute and concise parallelepiped, of 200 metres by 115, for a height of
scarcely 13 metres, composed of a service
basement area, a ground floor dedicated
to reception, outpatients and accidents

and emergencies, a first floor of operating
blocks and surgery, cardiology and maternity
departments and a last floor for paediatrics,
child psychiatry and adult psychiatry.
the choice of the architects to design the
same single and compact building, rather
than several connected entities required
perfect management of the flow, safety,
hygiene, operation and light. although the
objective was met, while giving preference
to comfort and readability, it is through the
implementation of a development concept
that they have been developing for some
years now. the single hospital space developed by brunet saunier consists in using
a fixed structural framework in which free
platforms, patios with natural lighting and
circulation arteries find their place. Within
such a maze, a wide range of colours and
control of transparency act as the signage.
thus, coloured empty spaces intersperse
this indoor world and make easier to use.
although there is no landscape to be
thought out here, since the terrain is so flat,
this is a godsend, since the architects chose
strong artificial materiality that was inconspicuous yet efficient, and concise but not silent.
the evanescent skin implemented here is an
alternation of transparencies and opacities
composed of breathable glazed panels with
integrated blinds and ‘shadow boxes’, whose
serigraphy of white vertical lines is repeated
endlessly. completely scalable, since it can
be removed and reconstructed as you wish,
it elegantly conceals the repetition of the
openings and the technical elements, while
providing protection and privacy, as well as
regulating solar gain. perfectly smooth and
unchanging, it provides the tranquillity and
luxury that often lack in a cold and distressing
hospital environment.
