SYNOPSIS
Jeune fille effacée à peine sortie de l’adolescence, Marie (18 ans) est attirée comme un
papillon de nuit par le luxe et les paillettes. Sa vie bascule le jour où elle rencontre Olivier
(45 ans) un riche patron de boîtes de nuit qui craque sous le charme de sa candeur mordante. À son contact, elle apprend à profiter de l’argent facile sans savoir où elle a mis
les pieds. Son copain Vincent, jeune skateur fauché de 21 ans qui s’occupe de Mika, son
frère autiste et muet, n’en saura rien jusqu’au jour où...
Marie (18), a subdued young woman just emerging from adolescence, is drawn by luxury
and glitter like a moth to a flame. Her life changes dramatically when she meets Olivier
(45), a wealthy nightclub owner, who is unable to resist her disconcerting candour. Through
him, she learns how to make easy money without realising what she has got herself into.
Her boyfriend, Vincent, a broke young skater (21), who looks after Mika, his autistic and
mute brother, remains blissfully unaware until the day when....

DECLARATION DU REALISATEUR
Poème initiatique, Left Foot Right Foot tente la traversée des eaux mouvementées de la
jeunesse pour dépeindre ce moment charnière où il faut choisir, mettre un pied devant
l’autre pour avancer. De l’effacement du lien jusqu’à sa reconquête, c’est l’histoire d’un
couple, d’un âge, d’une époque.
Un couple qui, malgré sa précocité, est déjà figé dans une forme de routine de la relation
amoureuse. Deux solitudes liées par la peur du vide qui ont besoin l’une de l’autre pour se
tenir chaud, dans un monde glacé par les apparences. Un âge au sortir de l’adolescence
où l’on cherche son identité, sa place et ses repères dans le monde adulte. Une époque
enfin, marquée par les illusions de la consommation, la réification du corps, la banalisation de la prostitution, où le pouvoir de l’argent vaut promesse de liberté.
La manière insidieuse avec laquelle Marie va glisser dans la prostitution traduit son
manque de discernement sur les conséquences d’un passage à l’acte. Elle se retrouve
prise au piège de sa propre candeur, engagée de force dans une spirale dont elle ne
pourra sortir intacte. L’intensification de l’existence au travers du drame est un élément
central de la réflexion du film.
Je voulais montrer cet instant singulier d’une prise de conscience possible, de ce moment
unique dans la vie de chacun où tout change pour toujours, où les idées préconçues sont
balayées, et où peut naître l’étincelle d’un nouveau départ. J’ai souhaité évoquer cette
soif de proximité des personnages avec eux-mêmes, cette nécessité d’affronter ses propres ombres pour faire l’expérience de la vérité.
Du bruit des planches de skate aux rythmes des boîtes de nuit, la musique du film est
comme la musique de cette génération, persistante et continue. C’est comme un voile
posé sur le monde, qui aveugle et témoigne d’une réalité adolescente en permanence
envahie de sons.
L’adolescence, âge des contrastes s’il en est, où tout est noir ou blanc. Le médium adéquat pour raconter ce passage d’une réalité à l’autre s’est alors imposé : le noir et blanc,
qui justement, a cette capacité à montrer l’intime tout en nous tenant un peu à distance de
la réalité perçue. Il gomme l’anecdote au profit de l’universel. Permet de saisir l’essence
des images sans qu’elles nous absorbent totalement. Il engage le spectateur à devenir
d’une certaine manière co-auteur du film. Le cinéma peut alors devenir révélateur de notre
propre intériorité.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
The initiatory poem Left Foot Right Foot delves into the crossing of the turbulent waters
of adolescence to explore this turning point when one has to choose and put one foot in
front of the other in order to move forward. From erasing the bond until its reconquest, this
is the story of a couple, an age, an era.
A couple, whose relationship, despite its precocity, has already become set in a kind of
routine. Two solitudinous existences linked by the fear of emptiness, who need one another to keep warm in an icy world of appearances. An age on the threshold of adulthood,
where one seeks one’s identity, one’s place in society and one’s points of reference in
the adult world. An age characterised by the illusion of consuming, the reification of the
body, and the trivialisation of prostitution, where the power of money is equivalent to the
promise of freedom.
The insidious way in which Marie slips into prostitution reflects her lack of discernment
about the consequences of passing from word to deed. She finds herself caught in the
trap of her own candour, being committed by force to a spiral from which she will not
emerge intact. The intensification of existence through tragedy is a central element of the
film’s reflection.
I wanted to show this singular moment of potential awareness, this unique moment in
everyone’s life when everything changes for good, when preconceived ideas are swept
aside, and when the spark of a new beginning may arise. I wished to portray the characters’ hunger for proximity with themselves, their need to confront their own shadows to
experience the truth.
From the skateboard noise to the rhythms in the night clubs, the film music is like the
music of this generation: persistent and continuous. It is like a veil drawn over the world, a
blinding veil showing that the adolescents’ reality is permanently invaded by sounds.
Adolescence, an age of contrasts per se, where everything is either black or white. The
means appropriate to portraying this transition from one reality to another could only be
black and white, which has precisely the ability to show innermost aspects while keeping
us slightly removed from the reality perceived. Black and white erases the anecdote to
bring out what is universal. It allows capturing the essence without absorbing us completely. It engages the viewer into somehow becoming a co-author of the film. A film may
thus become a means of revealing our own interiority.

Photographe et cinéaste.
Né le 8 août 1975 à Lausanne (Suisse), Germinal Roaux suit toute sa scolarité à l’Ecole Rudolf Steiner de Lausanne.
Il commence, à l’âge de 16 ans, une option “photographie” qu’il poursuivra pendant deux années et s’intéresse à
la réalisation audiovisuelle, sur des tournages publicitaires à New-York.
En 1994, il réalise comme travail de fin d’étude son premier documentaire sur le problème de la désertification au
Burkina Faso “Une pluie et des hommes”.
De retour en Suisse en 1995, il devient photographe-reporter RP pour les magazines L’Illustré et L’Hebdo (Suisse),
pour lesquels il travaille en “free-lance” durant plus de 10 ans.
En 2000, il reçoit le Premier Prix Suisse des Médias pour une série de reportages photos traitant de l’autisme chez
l’enfant et l’adulte, exposé au Musée de l’Élysée de Lausanne.
En 2002, il devient collaborateur régulier des magazines de mode Edelweiss et Type pour lesquels il travaille comme
photographe Studio.
En 2003, Germinal Roaux réalise son premier film documentaire, “Des tas de choses”, un film de 28 minutes sur
l’intégration des handicapés mentaux dans notre société. Pierre Assouline dans Le Monde écrit à propos du film:
“28 minutes de grâce absolue. Un supplément d’âme.”
En 2007, son deuxième film “Icebergs” remporte le Prix du Meilleur Espoir au Festival international du film de
Locarno ainsi que le Prix de la Relève Suissimage SSA pour le meilleur court métrage suisse de l’année 2007 au
43ème Journées de Soleure. Germinal Roaux est invité à participer à la seconde édition des Zürich Master Class
avec notamment Oliver Stone, Pavel Lungin et Matthew Modine comme intervenant. La même année Germinal
Roaux débute son journal photographique, qu’il publie chaque mois sur internet. Un journal intime en noir et blanc
où il raconte, sous le titre de travail qu’il s’est donné “Never Young Again” le passage entre l’adolescence et l’âge
adulte. “J’aime photographier les jeunes qui se prennent pour des grands, ou les jeunes à qui on a donné des responsabilités de grands et qui dans leurs yeux sont toujours des enfants”. Citation tirée d’un article de Libération.
En 2008, “Icebergs” est invité en compétition internationale au TriBeCa Film Festival de New-York dirigé par Robert
de Niro. La même année Germinal Roaux participe aux Ateliers d’Angers, crées par Jeanne Moreau en parallèle du
Festival de Cinéma Premiers Plans.
En 2009, A la demande de Jeanne Moreau, Germinal Roaux réalise la bande annonce de la 21e édition du Festival
du Film Premiers Plans d’Angers. Un court métrage qui a été réalisé sans caméra, uniquement avec un appareil
photographique. Plus de 20’000 clichés ont été nécessaires à la réalisation de ce film qui utilise la technique du
“Stop Motion”. L’actrice française Adèle Haenel, découverte au cinéma dans “La Naissance des Pieuvres” tient le
premier rôle de cette bande annonce. La même année, Germinal Roaux est l’un des 12 artistes sélectionnés par
Olivier Saillard, conseiller artistique de la Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie, pour son travail photographique
sur l’adolescence “Never Young Again”.
En 2010, Germinal Roaux termine l’écriture d’un scénario de long métrage pour le cinéma “Left Foot Right Foot”
produit par CAB Productions (Lausanne). Trois expositions simultanées présentent son travail photographique
“Never Young Again”, au Romandie (Lausanne), au Palais de Rumine ainsi qu’à l’Arsenic (exposition collective
“Black Mirror”).
En 2012, Germinal Roaux réalise le long métrage “Left Foot Right Foot”.

Born on 8 August 1975 in Lausanne (Switzerland), Germinal Roaux follows his education at Rudolf Steiner School
of Lausanne.
He begins in the “photography” department at the age of 16 for two years and is interested in audiovisual production on advertising shootings in New York.
In 1994, he realize as work study end his first documentary on the desertification problem in Burkina Faso “une
pluie et des hommes”.
Back in Switzerland in 1995, he become a photographer-reporter RP for the magazines “L’Illustré” and “L’Hebdo
(Switzerland)” for which he works as “freelance” for over 10 years.
In 2000, he receive the First Prize Swiss Media for a series of photo reports exposed at “Musée de l’Élysée” in
Lausanne on children and adults autism.
In 2002, he become a regular contributor for the fashion magazines “Edelweiss” and “Type” for which he works as
a Studio photographer.
In 2003, Germinal Roaux directed his first documentary film, “Des tas de choses”, a 28 minutes film on the integration of the mentally disabled in our society. Pierre Assouline from the newspaper “Le Monde” write about this movie
“28 minutes of absolute grace. A supplement of soul.”
In 2007, his second film “Icebergs” wins le “Prix du Meilleur Espoir” at the International Locarno Film Festival and
the “Prix de la Relève Suissimage SSA” on the 43rd Solothurn Day. Germinal Roaux is invited to participate at the
second edition of the Zurich Master Class where Oliver Stone, Pavel Lungin and Matthew Modine are present as
speakers. The same year Germinal Roaux begin his photographic journal which is published each month on the
web. A diary in black and white where he speaks, under the working title he gave to it “Never Young Again” about a
path through teenage years and adulthood. “I love to photograph young people who think they are adults, or young
people who have been given adults responsibilities and that you can see in their eyes that they remained children.”

In 2008, “Icebergs” is invited at Tribeca Film Festival, an international competition in New York directed by Robert
de Niro. The same year Germinal Roaux participates at “Ateliers d’Angers” created by Jeanne Moreau in parallel of
the “Festival de Cinéma Premiers Plans.”
In 2009, at Jeanne Moreau’s request, Germinal Roaux realizes the trailer for the 21th edition of “Festival du Film
Premiers Plans d’Angers”. A short film that was made without a video camera, only with a still camera. More than
20,000 photographs were necessary to achieve this film which uses the “Stop Motion” technique. The french actress, Adèle Haenel, discovered in the film “La Naissance des Pieuvres” has the leading role in this trailer. The same
year, Germinal Roaux is one of 12 artists selected by Olivier Saillard, artistic advisor of the Fondation HSBC for
Photography for his photographic work on teenage years “Never Young Again”.
In 2010, Germinal Roaux finishes writing a scenario for the feature film “Left Foot Right Foot” produced by CAB
Productions (Lausanne). Three simultaneous exhibitions presents his photographic work “Never Young Again” at
the “Romandie” (Lausanne), at “Palais de Rumine” as well as “l’Arsenic” (group exhibition “Black Mirror”).
In 2012, Germinal Roaux realizes the feature film “Left Foot Right Foot”.

À l’âge de 13 ans, il participe, durant deux saisons à la tournée suisse du cirque Chnopf en tant qu’acteur et artiste
de cirque. Suite à cette expérience, il obtient un rôle dans la pièce “Lieber 99 falsche Tode als 9 Stunden falsches
Leben” au Théâtre Neumarkt à Zürich.
En parallèle à sa formation de libraire, il a fait ses débuts au Théâtre de la jeunesse de Soleure où il restera trois ans.
Après son apprentissage, il commence en 2009, l’École d’art dramatique de Zürich. Durant l’été 2010, il a été vu
dans le rôle de Jéroboam dans la pièce “La Reine de Saba” à l’Origen Festival au Col du Julier (Suisse).
En 2011, Dimitri se voit attribuer le Prix d’études du Pour-cent culturel Migros, il reçoit également de la Fondation
Rentsch Olten pour les artistes créateurs de théâtre / art dramatique un prix d‘encouragement. Et finalement encore le Prix de la Fondation Armin Ziegler. Pour la pièce de fin d’étude, sa classe obtient le Prix d’ensemble, aux
rencontres des acteurs des principales écoles germanophones, Schauspieltreffen, à Vienne pour la pièce “Noces
de Sang” sous la direction de Martina Eitner-Aecheampong.
Il joue dans plusieurs court-métrages, comme dans “Il était une fois à Bümpliz” d‘Arnaud Baur, prix du jury au FiFF
(Festival internationnal du film de Fribourg) et obtient, en 2012, le rôle de l’autiste Mika dans le film “ LEFT FOOT
RIGHT FOOT ” qui sortira courant de l’automne 2013 dans les salles de cinéma.
At the age of 13, he participated during two seasons at the Swiss tour of Circus Chnopf as actor and circus performer. Following this experience, he landed a role in the play “Lieber 99 falsche Tode als 9 Stunden falsches Leben“
at Theater Neumarkt in Zurich.
Alongside his bookseller formation, he made his debut at the Youth Theatre of
Solothurn where he remained three years. After his apprenticeship, he began in 2009, the Drama School of Zürich.
During the summer of 2010, he was seen in the role of Jeroboam in the play “The Queen of Sheba” at the Origen
Festival at Col du Julier (Switzerland).
In 2011, Dimitri was awarded the Education Award “per cent” cultural of Migros , he also receives from the Rentsch
Olten Foundation an encouragement price for creative artists of theatre / drama. And finally even the price of Armin
Ziegler Foundation. For the end study play, his class gets the price of groupe at the meeting of the actors from
main German schools at Schauspieltreffen, in Vienna for the play “Blood Wedding” under the direction of Martina
Eitner-Aecheampong.
He played in several short films, such as “Once upon a time in Bümpliz” by Arnaud Baur, Jury Prize at Fiff (internationnal Film Festival of Fribourg) and got in 2012, the role of Mika, an autism, in the film “LEFT FOOT RIGHT FOOT”
which will be released during autumn 2013 in cinemas.

Jean-Louis Porchet and Gérard Ruey founded CAB Productions in 1984 and have since produced full-length feature films,
such as Krzysztof Kieslowski’s trilogy “Trois couleurs: Bleu-Blanc-Rouge”, Claude Chabrol’s “Merci pour le chocolat” and
“Rien ne va plus”, Alain Tanner’s films as well as TV films and documentaries, such as “La Liste de Carla” or “B comme
Béjart”. CAB Productions has won the Best Fiction Film Award from Swiss Cinema twice: in 2004 for Dominique de Rivaz’s

Jean-Louis PORCHET
Jean-Louis Porchet was born in Switzerland in 1949. He has been active in the film industry since 1970. He
worked for four years for Télévision Rencontres (“Le Chagrin et la pitié” by Max Ophüls, “Idi Amin Dada” by
Barbet Schroeder). He was the manager of Film et Vidéo Collectif in Lausanne for four years and he worked as
a unit manager for several full-length features. He founded CAB Productions in Lausanne in 1984.
Gérard RUEY
Gérard Ruey was born in Switzerland in 1953. He has been working in film and audiovisual production since
1974. As an assistant director then a production manager, he worked with Swiss directors like Michel Soutter,
Jean-Luc Godard, Yves Yersin, Patricia Moraz, Marcel Schüpbach and Jean-François Amiguet. He joined JeanLouis Porchet, founder of CAB Productions, in 1984.
