3. Le d é b l o c a g e de crédits pour un
p r o g r a m m e de c o n s t r u c t i o n d ' a c c é lérateur au F N A L avec, à l o n g terme,
un projet de réalisation d ' u n accélérateur e t / o u d ' a n n e a u x de collisions
dans la g a m m e des 1 0 0 0 GeV et a u delà. Un accélérateur fournissant des
faisceaux de haute énergie projetés
sur une cible fixe est supérieur aux
a n n e a u x de stockage tant en ce q u i
c o n c e r n e les taux d ' i n t e r a c t i o n q u e la
diversité des faisceaux de particules
secondaires. Le c o m i t é a envisagé la
c o n s t r u c t i o n d ' u n accélérateur
de
q u e l q u e s TeV, q u i serait le p r o c h a i n
défi lancé par le F N A L (dans 10 o u
15 a n s ) ; il a d o n c r e c o m m a n d é d ' a p puyer les recherches sur le « d o u b l e u r
d ' é n e r g i e » et les autres m é t h o d e s q u i
permettraient d'atteindre de telles
énergies. Si l'on ne réussit pas à mettre
au p o i n t de n o u v e a u x procédés t e c h niques permettant de d i m i n u e r le
c o û t d ' u n e m a c h i n e capable de f o u r n i r
des énergies de plusieurs milliers de
GeV, il c o n v i e n d r a p e u t - ê t r e d ' e n v i sager des s o l u t i o n s de t y p e internat i o n a l dans le cadre d ' u n e e x t e n s i o n

L'accélérateur linéaire de p r o t o n s de
8 0 0 M e V de Los A l a m o s ( L A M P F ) a
f o n c t i o n n é en j u i n à une intensité
maximale de 10 m A . A v e c u n e i m p u l s i o n de 1 6 0 fxs, il n'y a pas eu
d ' é c l a t e m e n t de faisceau. L'intensité
m o y e n n e a dépassé 9 0 i^A à un t a u x
d'utilisation de 2 %; ces valeurs n ' o n t
été limitées que par l'utilisation d ' u n
absorbeur de faisceau provisoire.
Les pertes de faisceau dans la sect i o n de t y p e Alvarez ( q u i assure l'accélération j u s q u ' à 1 0 0 M e V ) n'ont pas
une i m p o r t a n c e déterminante et p e u -
v e n t être acceptées en e x p l o i t a t i o n à
intensité élevée. Environ 2 % d u
faisceau s o n t perdus dans l'accélérat i o n de 1 0 0 à 2 4 0 M e V avec les cavités
à c o u p l a g e latéral et encore e n v i r o n
1 % dans l'accélération de 2 4 0 à
8 0 0 M e V , également dans des cavités
à c o u p l a g e latéral. Plus de 9 0 % d u
faisceau injecté a atteint la pleine énergie avec une dispersion en q u a n t i t é
de m o u v e m e n t comprise entre 0,1 et
0,2 %. Les particules de faible énergie
q u i n'ont pas une phase correcte p o u r
subir une accélération c o m p l è t e p e u v e n t être absorbées, si nécessaire, dans
un c o l l i m a t e u r installé près de la
première c o u r b u r e dans l'aire de d i s t r i b u t i o n des faisceaux située à la
sortie de la m a c h i n e .
L A M P F , actuellement exploité de
f a ç o n régulière pour les recherches
de p h y s i q u e , accélère des faisceaux à
des intensités comprises entre 5 et
10 fjt-A avec un t a u x d'utilisation de
5 %. Ces chiffres resteront p r o b a b l e m e n t les mêmes t a n t q u e l ' é q u i p e m e n t des zones d ' e x p é r i m e n t a t i o n
ne sera pas amélioré. Le n o m b r e
d'expériences i n d é p e n d a n t e s p o u v a n t
f o u r n i r des d o n n é e s peut aller j u s q u ' à

very high energy hadron physics. It re­
views in some detail the experimental
results on elementary particle scatter­
ing and production recently obtained at
the two new very high energy facilities,
the Intersecting Storage Rings at
CERN, and at the National Accelerator
Laboratory, at Batavia, as well as data
from older accelerators such as the one
at Serpukhov. The phenomenological
interpretation of these data in terms of
the Regge pole picture are outlined and
discussed. Attempts at a more funda­
mental theoretical understanding of
these processes are also described,
with the major emphasis on field theo­
retic and multiperipheral models. These
models are described in some detail,
and both their successes and shortcom­
ings are pointed out. Other theoretical
ideas, encompassed in pictures of
elementary particles as droplets, in
statistical descriptions of high energy
production processes, and in fireball
descriptions of production, are men­
tioned more briefly.

With a Pearson current monitor and an
oscilloscope, you can measure pulse or
ac currents from milliamperes to kiloamperes, in any conductor or beam of
charged particles, at any voltage level up
to a million volts, at frequencies up to
35 MHz or down to 1 Hz.
The monitor is physically isolated from
the circuit. It is a current transformer
capable of highly precise measurement
of pulse amplitude and waveshape. The
one shown above, for example, offers
pulse-amplitude accuracy of + 1%, —0%
(typical of all Pearson current monitors),
20 nanosecond rise time, and droop of
only 0.5% per millisecond. Three db
bandwidth is 1 Hz to 35 MHz.

VERSUS MAGNET TEMPERATURE
An IGC superconductive magnet has decisively penetrated the
long-standing 150 kG barrier for commercial superconducting
solenoids. Built for the Mullard Cryogenic Laboratory of the
Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, England, the new magnet pro­
duces 158 kG at 4.2 K and 165 kG at 3.0 K. This record perform­
ance was made possible by IGC's modular approach to magnet
design, combined with the superior properties of IGC's stabil­
ized Nb Sn conductor.
Unique in its characteristics, the new magnet has an outer
diameter of only 231 mm and weighs only 66 kilograms. It is
also extremely stable, performing to 150 kG in less than 30 min­
utes on its first run, and in less than 10 minutes on subsequent
runs.
From a mechanical stress standpoint, the new magnet was
designed to perform to 165 kG. As the inset graph shows, how­
ever, the results suggest that IGC Nb Sn magnets may be
capable of fields in the range of 170 kG at temperatures near
the helium I point (2.18 K).
Superconductive magnet performance to fields above
180 kG at 4.2 K may also be made possible by this major ad­
vance. Such magnets will use V Ga superconductor (now avail­
able through IGC) in the regions of the winding space where
the field is greater than 150 kG.
