①除夜の鐘 is struck on at a temple and a shrine
②除 means remove, and 夜 is night. We call 除夜
midnight of the New Year’s Eve.
③It’s struck 108 times to remove 108の煩悩 on
the 除夜.
Q. What does “108の煩悩” mean?
A.煩悩 = worldly desires
107 times are struck in the 除夜, and the other
once is struck after the start of the new year.
We think that we have 六境
by teachings of Buddhism.
Now, let’s have a math class!
- The origin of 108 times There are six important points(六境) about
human sense by the teachings of Buddhism.

Additionally…
there are three emotions on each 六境.

And then…
there are more two choices in human
mind.

18 choices × 染 and 浄
= 36 choices in human mind
The 36 choices in human mind
be related to your entire life. I mean...

By Zach Ridenour
What is はつゆめ?
• はつゆめ is the first dream of the new year.
(January 1st)
• The dream will tell the luck of the dreamer
in the coming year.
• In these dreams the dreamer should see one
of the following lucky items. Mt. Fuji, a
Hawk, or an eggplant
The 7 lucky Gods and the lucky
items
More on はつゆめ
• It is a tradition to sleep with a picture of the
seven lucky gods under your pillow to
provoke these good dreams to occur.
• These items are lucky because Mt. Fuji is
Japans highest mountain, a hawk is a strong
and clever bird , and the Japanese word for
eggplant, なすび can also mean to achieve
something great
Some Final Words…
• The list of lucky items actually consists of
more than the original listed.
• It goes on to add a fan, tobacco, and a blind
musician. Any of these items are lucky, but
seeing them all combined must mean your
in for a good year!

by RJ
•お年玉 is a Japanese custom in
which adults give children money
over the New Year’s holiday.
•In the Edo period large stores and
wealthy families gave out a small
bag of もち.
•お年玉 is given when people visit
友達, neighbors, and relatives
between 1月1日~3日.
• most 日本の子ども are
excited about New Years
• Parents usually make
children save some of the
money and they can spend
some of it on things they
like.
•It is handed out in 小さい
decorated envelopes called
How much money do you get?
How much money given to a childe
depends on several factors, such as how
old the child is, how many children you
have to give お年玉 to, and, of course,
how much money you make.
Traditionally, older children are supposed
to get more money but many people today
give the same amount to siblings to
prevent jealousy and arguing.

初売り is started from 1月1日
or sometimes 2日or 3日. It
depends on each store. They
sell a lot of stuff cheaply like
Black Friday here.
福袋 includes many items in
the bag. But it costs cheaper
than you buy them separately
as usual.
