Far-Reaching Effects of the Hawaiian Islands

A 3,000-km-long
wake, many times
longer than any yet
observed, was
discovered lee of the
Hawaiian Islands
using QuikSCAT and
TRMM satellite data.
East of the islands,
the filtered SST field
varies little, to the
west greatly. In the
shadow of the
islands is a warm
tongue in the ocean
that both causes the
winds to converge
and is the result of
converging winds.
The winds create an
eastward countercurrent (simulated by
an ocean GCM in B)
that generates the
warm band.

New study finds
warming trend in oceans

Will warmer ocean temperatures
heat up the atmosphere?
The team of oceanographers spent seven
years compiling more than 5 million ocean
temperature readings taken from 1948 to
1996 in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific
oceans.
