Dear Parishioners,
The Visit of the Wise Men is one of the best known and most painted of the Christmas stories. It captures our imaginations in
many ways: the quest for an answer to a mystery, a long trip, people of high station humbling themselves in a stable. No one
knows the names of these men (although tradition calls them Gaspar, Balthasar and Melchior), which makes the story universal. Many of us, in smaller ways, have made similar journeys of spending time and effort to reach a goal, and sometimes we
had to humble ourselves to achieve it. So a connection is there.
But the later darker part of the story is important to remember, too. The plot to kill the Infant Jesus was hatched by King Herod due to the visit of the Wise Men. Herod’s paranoia caused the exile of the Holy Family to Egypt and the massacre of the
children of Bethlehem. In our time, millions of people around the world are living the nightmare of forced exile and watching
their families suffer in refugee camps or worse. In addition, children who are used and abused and killed by powerful political and economic leaders for their own gain can be found on every continent of the world.
As we continue to celebrate this Christmas season, let us ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds and hearts to the ways we
can be of assistance to our brothers and sisters who are suffering these terrible burdens. ~ Fr. Jim

Hints for the Flu Season
As we enter the flu season, we are offering two practical directives to assist the congregation during Mass.
The “Sign of Peace” does not have to be a handshake.
Turning to those near you and offering a slight bow with a verbal wish without touching is proper.
Be mindful of the symptoms of colds and the flu. If you
have any symptoms, please refrain from receiving the Precious
Blood from the Communion Cup.
Also, getting a flu shot is a way of helping yourself & others.

Do you or anyone in your family have a problem with wheat
products? This allergy often prevents people from sharing in
Communion completely because they cannot receive the Host.
We have special hosts made by a Convent in the Midwest that
many people have been able to use, because there is only
0.01% gluten in these hosts. For info, check their website
benedictinesisters.org. IMPORTANT: if you are gluten
intolerant, consult with your doctor before use.
Can you Help?
New Parishioner? Moving out of the parish?
Kindly fill out the form below drop it in collection basket or mail to rectory. It will help us keep our files up-todate and welcome newcomers.
If you wish to receive one of these hosts, please let the priest
celebrating mass know before mass so he can have one for you,
then go to him at communion. As you receive, please remind
him that you need a “special host.”

Becoming a Catholic Christian
Do you know a neighbor or family member who has expressed a desire to learn more about the Catholic faith, and,
perhaps, to enter our Catholic community? Perhaps your spouse has been thinking about becoming a Catholic and does
not know how to proceed. Have you been explaining your faith to someone, and now that individual wants to know more about the
Catholic religion? If the answer to any of the above questions is “Yes,” then you should know about the RCIA, which stands for
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The Church uses this process to help adults move toward an adult commitment to the Lord,
and full participation in the Catholic community. It is meant specifically for adults who are seeking Baptism, or those who have not
received Confirmation or Eucharist. Those interested are invited to contact the rectory 732-3131 x 110.
